History

Black Atticus

Joseph J. Woods, the artist known as Black Atticus, has been a primary voice of Knoxville's Hip Hop & Spoken Word Poetry scene for the last 10 years. His creative roots stem from the guidance and support of some our cities most prominent mainstays, such as The Carpetbag Theatre, Inc and The Knoxville Poetry Slam.

In 2000 he and a group of young ambitious hip hop artist first stormed The Old City as a collective known as The Fluid Engineerz. Since that time, Black Atticus has formed alliances and collaborated with numerous artist, both locally and internationally, but one of the most prominent connections would be the one he formed with 'Rhea Sunshine', for it lead to the creation of "Black Sunshine Arts-N-Entertainment"; an organization that has been working with Knox County Schools and after school programs to promote literacy and public speaking, as well as host the Knoxville Poetry Slam for the last 8 years.
