Young Artists on Display, 5-7p.m.
Friday, November 6, the second floor gallery of the U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre joins the First Friday celebrations in downtown Knoxville by hosting an opening reception for several young artists from area elementary schools. The theater's Board of Directors hosts the reception for the artists, their parents and teachers from 5 to 7 p.m. Most of the works on display are the result of art classes in the Knox County schools. Others come from the Community School of the Arts, the Knoxville Christian School, and other arts programs in the area. The general public is invited to participate in this reception and First Friday event. The show will be on display throughout the month of November for Bijou patrons and visitors to enjoy when the theater is open for performances. The image above is by Emma Ruth Fox, a second grade student and the youngest member of the Knoxville Arts and Cultural Alliance. Her work is among the many pieces on exhibit at the Bijou Gallery in November.
bliss home
Recent works by Erika Smith will be on view at Bliss Home, 29 Market Square, for the month of November. An artist reception will be held during November's First Friday.
"The world is a boring place, and art is an escape from the boredom. Erika Smith has lived a double life for some years now, excelling in both industry and art. She quietly works as a number, just like you in the business world, but secretly has for years been creating a collection of mixed media collage while the suits aren't watching. Her mixed media collage style has been largely self-taught and inspired by the world around her., She sees the appeal of not only the typical sense of beauty, but the life and splendor in decay as well. One man's trash is Erika's treasure, as she can be found rooting through the discarded to incorporate antique photos and paint with broken glass, rusty nails, cast away doll parts, and a myriad of elements that seem unnatural but work so well together with Erika's touch."
