Kenny calls play-Phil, Peyton execute song
KEEP YOUR DAY JOBS: Country music star (and Knoxville native) Kenny Chesney performed recently at the Bijou Theatre. Chesney is a darling of Vol fans for his tune "Touchdown Tennessee," a salute to retiring broadcaster John Ward. On hand for the show were former Vol quarterback Peyton Manning and national champion coach Phil Fulmer and family. Both had made it clear to the event's sponsor, WIVK, that they did not want to be a visible part of the evening's performance so they were seated in the wings. Unfortunately, Chesney wasn't a part of that deal. Prior to singing "Touchdown Tennessee," he invited Manning onstage. The crowd went wild and Manning had no choice but to amble out. Apparently determined not to be out there alone, Manning announced that Fulmer was also there! The crowd began chanting "Fulmer! Fulmer!" until the coach reluctantly came out. When Fulmer found out Chesney intended for him to sing along to the song, he insisted that his wife, Vicky, and daughters, Courtney, Brittany and Allison, join him at the mike. How did Fulmer sing? Let's just say that the audience was glad the women were on hand!
EAT YOUR VEGGIES: The Farragut/West Knox Chamber of Commerce will hold a forum on Gov. Don Sundquist's proposed new business tax on March 23 at 4 p.m. at the Cedar Bluff Holiday Inn Select. Participants will be local investment adviser David Moon, who is opposed to the tax, and Knoxville lawyer Courtney Pearre, who is with the governor's office and who wrote the tax legislation. When invited to share the podium with Moon, Pearre quickly accepted. "I look forward to debating the world's largest vegetarian," he quipped in an e-mail. Moon, who is indeed a vegetarian, is a former UT offensive lineman.
SOMETHING FISHY: The Blount County Chamber Partnership held a coffee the other morning to showcase Rosa's Designs, a quiltmaker who uses African-American themes. The chamber drew business cards to give away door prizes, and the tickets to "Swan Lake" attracted the attention of chamber President and CEO Fred Forster. Forster at first appeared very disappointed that he did not win the tickets, but he quickly recovered when he was told that "Swan Lake" is an upcoming ballet performance by the Appalachian Ballet Company. "Oh, that's OK," Forster explained with a wink. "I thought they were for a fishing trip to Swan Lake!"
AW SHUCKS: Oysterfest, held last Friday to benefit Childhelp USA, was a huge success. Details will appear in Sunday's People and Parties. But the success did not come easily. As the food was being set up, it became apparent that Corky's Ribs & BBQ, which provided the victuals, had forgotten to bring tortilla chips for the nacho bar. As guests began pouring in, the event's unflappable chairman, Allyn Purvis Faulkner, pulled a wad of cash out of her pocket and dispatched a buddy, Alan Carmichael, to the nearest Pilot to buy all the Fritos and Doritos he could get his hands on. While Carmichael was gone, someone noticed that Corky's had also forgotten to bring cocktail sauce for the oysters. To remedy this, Faulkner sent her date, Mackey Brownlee, to the Chapman Highway Kroger to buy ketchup and horseradish in order to improvise while Corky's sent someone back to its West Knoxville location to pick up the real stuff. With the food finally situated, everyone proceeded to have a good time until the city police arrived at 11:10 and shut down the band, Boys' Night Out, for violating the new noise ordinance. "It's not really a good party until somebody calls the cops," said Faulkner with a shrug.
