Journalists can be a passionate bunch, especially where language is concerned. Editors and writers go back and forth over which words, and how many of them, tell the best story. Copy editors are prone to agonize as they try to come up with the right phrase for a headline, and photographers sometimes struggle to describe their work in a cutline.
I've seen more than one meeting at the Knoxville News Sentinel/Knoxnews.com come to a frustrating deadlock as the participants contemplated which term best describes a list of upcoming activities: "events," "fun stuff" or "things to do." (I wish I were making this up.)
But in a rare moment of uniformity, we all agree that "Knoxville.com" is an awesome name.
It's simple and direct - no tricky abbreviations or extraneous words to remember. It's the Boardwalk of Knoxville-related domain names.
We've owned this precious commodity for more than a decade, and in typical fashion, we've long debated how to develop the site. What kind of content is worthy of Knoxville.com? We couldn't make up our minds.
We've considered the expectations a visitor to Knoxville.com might have, and last year we finally populated the site with general information on our city, "evergreen" content that would rarely change.
That was a functional solution, but also an inadequate one.
So this year we decided to beef up Knoxville.com, make it a site for Knoxville and about Knoxville. A dynamic place anyone could go - longtime residents, new residents, visitors, even those just curious about our town - to find out what's going on in Knoxville and what life is like here.
Now on Knoxville.com you can find all kinds of events, fun stuff and things to do, stories and reviews, and calendars about concerts, movies, cultural events, family festivals, restaurants and nightlife. Popular Knoxnews.com blogs by celebrity writer Terry Morrow and man-about-town Randall Brown reside here, too. We also have videos of performances at the WDVX "Blue Plate Special" shows as well as an extensive mp3 database of music by more than 200 local acts. Plus there's a guide for visitors and newcomers to Knoxville - information about neighborhoods, schools, shopping and more.
That's only a start. As Knoxville.com grows, we plan to broaden our range into the areas of outdoor activities, sports, consumer information, perhaps a new blog or two. And we hope to get you involved, too: We want your opinions, photos and videos because Knoxville.com is for all of us.
Regardless of whether you're a resident or a visitor, we want Knoxville.com to be the place to find out what's happening here.
Thanks for being here.
