Bijou Theatre to celebrate 100th anniversary with January jubilee
Happy birthday to the Bijou Theatre, a Gay Street institution with a colorful history and determination within its 100-year-old walls to survive, overcome and even thrive.
The historic 803 S. Gay St. theater has lasted a century. So it is celebrating with a four-day jubilee in January 2009.
"Bijou means 'jewel' in French and this certainly is a jewel," said Ashley Capps, president of A.C. Entertainment that now manages the theater.
Supporters Wednesday announced the Bijou 100 Year Jubilee. The Jan. 28-31 entertainment includes 22 performances, lectures, tours or other events. Events are at the theater or the adjoining restaurant Bistro at the Bijou.
Some events are free. Other individual shows range from $5 for a late night showing of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" to $25 for a Jan. 30 show by Knoxville native and comedian Henry Cho.
A festival pass is $125, with $10 additional for the Cho show and $15 more for a Jan. 31 "Songwriters in the Round" with Dave Barnes, John Davis, Erick Baker and Robinella.
Tickets are available by calling the Tennessee Theatre box office, 865-684-1200, or through Tickets Unlimited.
Bijou supporters also can help support the theater through a campaign to light up a reproduction marquee and vertical sign. The new lighting, based on those from the 1920s and '30s, will be turned on at the Jan. 28 jubilee kickoff.
By Wednesday, 178 of the display's 488 bulbs are sold. Each bulb is $25; more information can be found at www.knoxbijou.com.
