Former News Sentinel writer Ryan Murphy brings 'Glee' to Fox

An ex-reporter for the Knoxville News Sentinel has created a new high school musical series, set to premiere on Fox in 2009.

Ryan Murphy — who went from writing lifestyle features for the News Sentinel to creating shows like “Nip/Tuck” — is whipping up “Glee,” about a high school glee club trying to better itself.

Fox announced Tuesday it has ordered 13 episodes of new musical-comedy series.

The one-hour series follows an optimistic high school teacher as he tries to transform the school’s Glee Club and inspire a group of ragtag performers to make it to the biggest competition of them all: Nationals. The show will debut in 2009 and features a soundtrack of hit songs from past to present.

Matthew Morrisonof Broadway’s “Hairspray” has the lead role as the glee club teacher.
