Jim Decker, chief executive officer of MEDIC Regional Blood Bank, is a native of Baton Rouge, La., but he's been in the Big Orange state since 1976. His background is in hospital administration; prior to joining MEDIC two years ago, he was senior vice president for Baptist Health System. He and wife, Michelle, a registered nurse at East Tennessee Children's Hospital, have three children, a beagle and a cat. His blood type is O-positive, and he'll have a chance to show his true colors during MEDIC's annual Orange-Blue competition with the University of Kentucky Nov. 17-21 (www.medicblood.com).
What's the best reason you can think of for being a blood donor?
The best reason to donate blood is as a service to the community - helps to insure that there is an adequate blood supply to provide for the needs of the patients in area hospitals.
What's the biggest challenge you face?
Coming up with creative ways in which to recruit more donors so as to keep up with the increasing demand. Utilization of blood and blood products at all local hospitals is increasing, which places a greater burden on MEDIC to increase our overall collections.
How can people conquer their fears of donating blood?
Many first-time donors simply need to get over the "fear factor" that something bad may happen. Most donors find that a good night's rest and healthy meal helps to overcome any anxiety they may have about donating. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids (water is best) prior to donating. If needed, bring a friend or relative along to add moral support.
What makes your blood boil?
Watching my beloved LSU Tigers get routed by Florida on national television.
