KNOXVILLE — Lots of gleaming metal and chrome greeted visitors today as the 22nd Annual News Sentinel Auto Show opened at the Knoxville Convention Center, with cars, trucks and other vehicles from 17 major auto manufacturers.
With the automotive industry under unprecedented pressure from a weak economy and slumping sales, there were new models of hybrid vehicles and smaller cars, and while there were still quite a few full-sized trucks, not as many large SUVS as there seemed to be in the past.
The trend with buyers right now is better mileage, said Bob Haag, exhibit manager for GM at the Knoxville show.
“They are looking for a smooth ride and fuel economy, almost at any cost,” he said.
In most all cases, manufacturers are trying to squeeze more fuel economy into their designs to capture this trend, Haag said.
Hours for the News Sentinel Auto Show are 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday and noon-6 p.m. Sunday. More information is at www.knoxautoshow.com.
