KNOXVILLE — A federal judge sentenced a machinist who tried to blow up a police impound lot where authorities were holding his seized truck to a 15-year prison term today.
U.S. District Judge Tom Varlan inked his approval to a plea deal that netted Jeffrey Dean Jones, 39, the mandatory minimum sentence for attempting to destroy with homemade pipe bombs and Molotov cocktails the Sweetwater Police Department impound lot — and his own truck — in a bizarre incident in early 2007. The plan failed when some of the devices failed to detonate, limiting damage to a handful of vehicles and the windows of a nearby school.
Assistant Federal Defender Jonathan Moffatt said Jones “had a pretty regular life” free of crime until a few years ago when he became addicted to prescription painkillers after going to a pain clinic for treatment.
More details as they develop online and in Tuesday’s News Sentinel.
