SAM & RUBY ON THE SQUARE

Singer-songwriter duo Sam and Ruby is Sam Brooker and Ruby Amanfu, from left below. Hailing from Green Bay, Wis., and Ghana, West Africa, respectively, the musical pair is now based in Nashville.

Sam and Ruby will open a concert for Knoxville troubadour Erick Baker at 9 p.m. at The Square Room, 4 Market Square.

GRAND OPENING WEEKEND AT LEVEL 10

New rock 'n' roll venue Level 10 a will celebrate its grand opening this weekend with with rock band Drivin' Blind on Friday, Aug. 28, and the dancers of White Lightnin' Burlesque on Saturday, Aug. 29.

This will be one of the last chances to catch Robinson as a hometown hero before she moves off to California.

NEW CONTEMPORARY ART EXHIBIT SERIES AT KMA

"Contemporary Focus," a new exhibit series spotlighting the development of contemporary art in East Tennessee, will open with a free reception 7-9 p.m. at the Knoxville Museum of Art, 1050 World's Fair Park Drive.

The inaugural show in the series will feature artist Hunter Clark, Patricia Tinajero and David Wolff Sept. 4-Nov. 8.

'EXTRACT'

Jason Bateman and Mila Kunis, from left below, star in the new comedy "Extract."

Bateman plays the owner of a flavor extract company who is preparing to sell the business and retire when a freak accident jeopardizes his plans.

The R-rated film comedy is written and directed by Mike Judge ("beavis and Butt-Head," "Office Space" and "King of the Hill"). The cast includes Kristen Wiig, Ben Affleck, J.K. Simmons and Gene Simmons (no relation).

Gerard Butler and Michael C. Hall, from left, face off in the sci-fi action film "Gamer," opening in theaters Friday, Sept. 4. Butler's character is the star player in a mass-scale, multi-player online game that allows humans to control other humans in battles to the death. He fights to regain his independence and take down Hall's character, mastermind behind the game. The film is rated R.
