“That Evening Sun,” shot and produced in the Knoxville area in 2008, garnered two Independent Spirit Award nominations on Tuesday.
Actors Ray McKinnon and Mia Wasikowska were nominated in the Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress categories. McKinnon plays Lonzo Choat, the abusive husband and father who comes into conflict with an escapee from a nursing home (Hal Holbrook). Wasikowska plays Lonzo’s daughter, who longs to escape her grim family situation.
“The nominations are a validation that we have a good product,” says Larsen Jay, president of Knoxville-based DoubleJay Creative / Dogwood Entertainment. He is also an executive producer of “That Evening Sun.”
“The nominations and any awards we win just further reinforce to audience members that this is a quality story and quality film. When you’re trying to get people to go see your movie — to choose between a big studio film and what you have — these kinds of awards help.”
In her category, Wasikowska is up against Dina Korzun for “Cold Souls”; Mo’Nique, “Precious”; Samantha Morton, “The Messenger”; and Natalie Press, “Fifty Dead Men Walking.”
McKinnon is facing Jemaine Clement for “Gentleman Broncos”; Woody Harrelson, “The Messenger”; Christian McKay, “Me and Orson Welles”; and Christopher Plummer, “The Last Station.”
The Spirit Awards are often called the Academy Awards for independent films. Winning a Spirit Award could mean even bigger honors are on the horizon.
The film was shot in Knoxville and surrounding communities on a shoestring budget during the summer of 2008. “‘Evening Sun’ would not have happened if it were not for the hundreds of hundreds of people from our community who helped,” Jay says.
After months of anticipation, local audiences can finally see “That Evening Sun” in theaters. It opens Jan. 22 at Downtown West Cinema 8.
