Melange/Bittersweet Cinema will screen two locally produced Appalachian-themed films on March 2 at Tomato Head.

The films will be "The Pioneer Doctor," by Jason Woods and William Isom II, and "Melungeon Voices," a documentary by Julie Williams Dixon & Warren Gentry. Dixon will be lead a question and answer session following the screenings.

"The Pioneer Doctor" is a short film, set in 1849 Appalachia, that tells the story of the fictional Gist family and how they deal with the loss of thier son, Isaac.

"Melungeon Voices" discusses the history and mystery surrounding the Melungeon people of southwest Virginia and East Tennessee.

In its Appalachian Film Series, the Mélange/Bitter-Sweet Cinema group plans to periodically offer films focusing on music, art and information at various venues throughout Knoxville. The effort is a collaboration between Knoxville artist William Isom and Sweet Southern Pixels, a media artists collective of area women.

Jon Worley of the Cornbread Blues Band will perform before and after the films on March 2. Refreshments will be available prior to screenings. Suggested donations will go to benefit the work of filmmaker Dixon.
