"Songs of Appalachia" was a monthly video series in 2008 that featured musicians from East Tennessee.
After a year working on the series, online producer/videographer Lauren Spuhler and News Sentinel staff writer Morgan Simmons discuss what they learned while working with the 12 profiles. They talk about how the music ranges from ballad-singing to banjo to fiddle.
Spuhler said working on the series was like having "a private show with someone or a group of people who were so talented in their given area of music." They also learned that it isn't hard to find really good musicians in East Tennessee. The challenge was narrowing it down.
Music featured in the series may be classified as "home-grown" or "old-timey" and is a mixture of fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitar, incorporating jigs, reels, polkas, country and bluegrass.
