University of Tennessee jazz professor and drummer Keith Brown, left, will discuss "What Is This Thing Called Jazz?" at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan.9, at the Lawson McGhee Library, 500 W. Church Ave. in downtown Knoxville.
Brown compares jazz improvisation to competing on a reality TV show -- players have to adapt to the "mood of the moment." In the talk, he will explain what improvisation is and discuss the role of different instruments in performance.
As a demonstration, Brown and two of his students will lead a game he calls "Jazz Survivor" in which the audience helps create an improvised piece of music. The band members will perform based on cues from the band leader.
Brown performs locally with the jazz trio Boling, Brown and Holloway.
This will be part one of a two-part presentation. Part two will be Feb. 6. Admission to both is free. The discussions are part of the library's jazz education program leading up to the Knoxville Jazz Festival March 4-7. The festival will feature musicians such as Freddy Cole, Don Byron and local jazz hero Donald Brown. For information, visit www.knoxjazzfest.org.
