BIJOU 100 YEAR JUBILEE EVENT SCHEDULE
Wednesday, Jan. 28
n 5-6 p.m., Kickoff/ Light Up the Bijou: Celebrate start of jubilee and mark new blade and marquee signs on Gay Street with “lighting up” ceremony. Free admission.
n 7-9 p.m., Tennessee Shines Radio Show: Live radio show broadcast from Bijou stage with host Jim Lauderdale and special guests, including The Duhks, Alejandro Escovedo, Blue Moon Rising, Jennifer Niceley and the Lovell Sisters. On Bijou main stage. Tickets: $10 advance, $15 door.
Thursday, Jan. 29
n 5-6 p.m., Happy Hour Swing Jazz with the Johnson Swingtet: Inspired by jazz music from the 1930s-50s, local group will serve up some hot swing at the Bistro at the Bijou restaurant. Free admission.
n 5-10 p.m., art auction: Bid on artist Mike Berry’s signature piece celebrating the Bijou’s 100th at silent auction in the Bijou gallery. Free admission.
n 7-8 p.m., Bach & Barber @ the Bijou: Members of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Tennessee Stage Company and Circle Modern Dance join for collaboration pairing the music of Samuel Barber, the spoken word of James Agee and a dance performance set to Bach’s music. On the Bijou main stage. Tickets: $10.
n 8-9 p.m., Angel Zuniga Martinez: Experience life after the Love Mongers with the artist whose voice has been compared to Morrissey and Freddie Mercury in the intimate Bistro at the Bijou restaurant. Free admission.
n 9-11 p.m., Grupo Fantasma: A Latin orchestra mixing animated performance with intelligent songwriting, with roots in cumbia, salsa and funk. On the Bijou main stage. Tickets: $25.
Friday, Jan. 30
n Noon-1 p.m., jazz brown bag lunch: Knoxville Jazz Orchestra to perform a range of tunes at Friday lunchtime concert. On Bijou main stage. Tickets: $10
n 2-4 p.m., author lecture, “A Restoration of Agee,” by Dr. Michael LoFaro: Professor of American literature and cultural studies to discuss Agee’s “A Death in the Family” and Agee’s impact on the literary world. On Bijou main stage. Tickets: $5.
n 4-5:30 p.m., Bijou/Lamar historical tour: Take a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the Bijou and Lamar House with Knox Heritage. Hear secrets, history and milestones about Knoxville’s fourth oldest building. Free admission.
n 5-6 p.m., Happy Hour Opera Showcase: Knoxville Opera Company members to show off their pipes in wonderfully intimate Bistro at the Bijou setting. Free admission.
n 5-6 p.m., Einstein Simplified improv comedy: K-town’s longest-running improvisational comedy troupe brings laughs and audience participation to Bijou main stage. Tickets: $10.
n 6-7 p.m., Vitantri Indian Fusion: Musical fusion combining elements of eastern and western rhythms, vocals, instruments. In Bijou gallery. Free admission.
n 8-10 p.m., Henry Cho with opener Dave Barnes: Knoxville native Henry Cho returns to K-town with his special brand of stand-up humor. On Bijou main stage. Tickets: $25.
n 10:30-midnight: Late-night horror film “Psycho”: A showing of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic black-and-white thriller. On Bijou main stage. Tickets: $5.
n Midnight, Ghost tour: Find out first-hand if the rumors and legends are true: Is the Bijou haunted? Tickets: $5.
Saturday, Jan. 31
n 11 a.m-noon: Marshal Andy’s Round-Up: Marshal Andy will rope in a new generation of fans as he entertains with music, humor, western rope tricks and some fine yodeling to boot. On Bijou main stage. Tickets: $5
n 1-2 p.m., Children’s Dance Showcase: East Tennessee Children’s Dance Ensemble showcases their work. On Bijou main stage. Tickets: $5.
n 3-4 p.m., Boozehound Gandy Dance: Performers bring the spirit of vaudeville to Bijou main stage with original and traditional songs, comedy, satire. Free admission.
n 5-6 p.m., dulcimer showcase: Expect the unexpected when Knoxville Dulcimer Club struts its stuff. In Bijou gallery. Free admission.
n 6-7 p.m., Tennessee Schmaltz: Group mixes traditional Klezmer sounds with southern Appalachian elelments in intimate setting. In Bistro at the Bijou restaurant. Free admission.
n 8-10 p.m., Dave Barnes and opener Songwriters in the Round: Hailing from Kosciusko, Miss., Barnes is a rock/R&B singer-songwriter known for his wit and humor. Opening act will include Barnes, Robinella, Jon Davis and Erick Baker.
n 11p.m.-midnight: Late-night poetry slam with Seed: Experience the power of the spoken word at the Bistro at the Bijou restaurant. Free admission.
