More movies - including some double features - will be shown this summer at the Bijou Theatre, 803 S. Gay St.
Movie tickets are $5 and are sold in advance at the Tennessee Theatre box office on Clinch Ave.; by phone at 865-684-1200 or at www.tennesseetheatre.com. (There's a $1-per-ticket fee for phone and online orders.)
The movies are:
"Let the Right One In," a 2008 R-rated film described as part drama, part thriller and part horror film. And it's also about friendship between two lonely 12-yewar-olds. Plays at 9 p.m. and midnight Friday, June 26, and Saturday, June 27.
"Voltaic," a 2009 concert film that features highlights from the Paris and Reykjavik, Iceland, dates on the Volta tour of the singer Bjork. Plays 9 p.m. Saturday, July 11.
"Easy Rider" and "Two-Lane Blacktop." Both these r-rated films come from the men looking for meaning in 1970s-era America. The 1969 "Easy Rider," now a classic, stars Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson. "Two-Lane Blacktop," released in 1971, features two young men (one is singer James Taylor) chasin' an older guy with a hot car and a female passenger. Shows at 9 p.m. Friday, July 17, and Saturday, July 18.
"Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal." These two 1980s cult favorites bear the mark of Jim Henson of "Muppet" fame. Henson directed "Labyrinth" that stars David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Henson and Frank Oz (the voice of the Muppet's Miss Piggy) directed the 1982 puppets-meets-science fiction "Dark Crystal." The double feature starts at 9 p.m. Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25.
"The Breakfast Club" and "Pretty in Pink," two more films from the 1980s. The John Hughes written double feature is all about growing up. "The Breakfast Club" - with its young stars who became called "The Brat Pack," was a much-watched movie for an entire generation. And "Pretty in Pink" stars a young Molly Ringwald but also includes James Spader ("Boston Legal) and Annie Potts (Designing Women.") Shows at 9 p.m. Friday, July 31, and Saturday, Aug. 1.
"Princess Mononoke" (1997, PG-13) and "Spirited Away," (2001, PG), both movies of Japanese animated fantasy and both have been praised for their animation and story. Plays 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, and Saturday, Aug. 8.
One note about the Bijou's double features. On Friday, the double features will be screened in the order they are listed above. On Saturday, that order is reversed so that the second listed film is shown first. Double features also include intermissions.
