As I've said before, the West Knoxville bar scene has become unfamiliar to me. I often find myself struggling to find a new bar I have yet to visit in the area.
This isn't to say that there is nothing to do in West Knoxville, but many of the "hot" nightlife spots are already well established. This tends to leave very little room for newer bars and, unfortunately for me, places to cover. With that said, I decided to revisit a place I thoroughly enjoyed almost a year and a half ago.
When I first strolled into the Wild Wing Cafe just off of Campbell Station Road, the first thing I noticed was the lake out front with a boat ramp off to the side. Sadly, due to the colder winter months during my first visit, it seemed that the cafe was only showing me a portion of what it has to offer.
I was right. When I pulled into the Wild Wing Cafe at a somewhat early 11 p.m. on a Saturday night, I had to search a while for a parking spot in their seemingly endless parking lot. Just driving around, I got a taste of the crowd at the Wild Wing, with people coming in just as quickly as others left. After finally finding a spot on the side of the road just outside the Cafe, I made my way inside.
I wasn't completely clear as to whether or not the Wild Wing Cafe is 21-and-up after a certain time, but we were given wristbands at the door in order to drink, leaving me to believe it was still all ages. Smoking, however, is limited to outside on the patio only.
One of the major draws for the Wild Wing Cafe during the summer is, of course, their patio. A majority of the crowd was crammed outside, huddled around the bar.
Throughout the summer, Wild Wing Cafe presents a number of boat and jet-ski shows on the lake. While I missed whatever they might have had that evening, I imagined it would be akin to a smaller-scale Seaworld stunt show.
Once the sun goes down, however, live music takes the stage inside, and sometimes out. While we were there, the band Ariel Down performed a bunch of covers inside to varying degrees of success, but was still entertaining. This Saturday will be the Wild Wing's 2nd birthday bash and looks to be a good time. The night will feature Matt Stillwell and Foxy Cleopatra, along with $1.25 Miller Lite pony bottles as well as $2.50 Miller Lite drafts. Did I mention their will be fireworks?
Entertainment aside, the Wild Wing Cafe has a ton of drink specials and entertainment during the week. Monday features $3 well drinks, $4 Jager and $2.50 Miller Lite drafts.
Monday is also Monday Madness where you can buy eight wings and get eight free (they are pretty good, too). Tuesday is trivia night with $2 domestic drafts, $2.50 import drafts and live bluegrass following the trivia. Wednesday is bike night with $5 Blue Motorcycles and $2.75 16oz Miller Lite. Thursday and Friday both feature live music, but fairly limited drink specials with $3 drafts and $5 Three Olives Martinis respectively.
Happy hour runs from 4-7 p.m. each day and features half priced appetizers and some decent drink specials with $3 well drinks, $2 domestic bottles and $2.75 domestic pints.
While the Wild Wing Cafe might seem crowded the service was still pretty good for only having two bartenders on duty inside.
Overall I had a great second outing at Wild Wing Cafe. It is now my personal mission to get back there this summer and check out the early evening entertainment.
