Friday started out interestingly for me at Bonnaroo. I attended a Bonnaroo Tweet-up at the Centeroo fountain, with fellow Bonnaroo tweeters.
Greg Needel (@robogreg) of Jackson, Tenn. started the idea last week as a way for tweeters to meet, and I helped spread the word. Needel even created a sign for us to gather around.
It was a slow start, but we wound up having about 15 people pass through, all from different parts of the country. Check out my live-stream video of the Tweet-up. We’re planning another one at the fountain on Saturday morning at 11 a.m..
I sat at our campsite and listened to Gomez from the Which Stage and was very impressed. I recognized their sound from a few Grey's Anatomy songs and wished they played for much longer. I was unfamiliar with their music and it was my favorite surprise of the day.
While charging my phone at the media tent, I saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs being interviewed by Triumph the Insult Dog (cell phone photo above) and saw a member of TV on the Radio just hanging out.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs put on an amazing show during what seemed to be the hottest part of the day. Karen O got the crowd dancing and waving their arms, as she alternated between a leather jacket and what appeared to be a Japanese muumuu.
My friends and I waded through the crowd to get to the main stage for Al Green, who performed a cover of “Sugar Pie Honey Bunch,” “My Girl” and others from that era, along with his biggest hits like “Let’s Stay Together.”
The Beastie Boys, David Byrne, Phish, Ani DeFranco, Lucinda Williams and Animal Collective were among other Friday performers.
