On June 1, Roy Acuff's fiddle made its way back home.
Lester G. Reynolds, a professional actor, contacted Martha Carter of the Union County Historical Society requesting to donate the fiddle. "I now am wanting to continue Roy Acuff's legacy and the legacy of my family by giving this piece of music history back to the man who gave it to my great-grandfather," Reynolds said.
Many years ago after a musical gathering at A.P. and Mae Bell Carter's General Store, Acuff gave the fiddle to James Elmer Hawkins, Reynolds' great-grandfather, who passed it to Larry Gale Reynolds, Reynolds' father, in 1969 as he was leaving to fight in the Vietnam War. Larry's wife, Wanda Cutshall Reynolds, placed the fiddle in her cedar chest.
Wanda Reynolds Hixson, Lester's mother, was present at the June 1 event when the fiddle was placed on permanent display in the Roy Acuff-Union Museum and Library.
The museum, 3824 Highway 33 in downtown Maynardville, is open and operated by volunteers 1-5 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Admission is free.
