Hip-hop act Arrested Development will kick off the free 2009 Sundown in the City concert series April 9, with weekly performances to follow through June 25.

The 2009 series will present a diverse group of artists ranging from Gavin Rossdale, the former front man of rock band Bush, to funk-jazz group Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe to country-rock act Shooter Jennings to reggae legends the Wailers.

Sundown in the City has become one of the most anticipated events in Knoxville, regularly drawing thousands to Market Square in downtown Knoxville. The genesis of the concert series was an Oct. 9, 1998, CD release show on Market Square by local rock act the V-Roys. The show wasn’t part of a series, but it drew more than 2,000 revelers, far more than anyone had anticipated. The following year, a CD release concert with R.B. Morris drew 1,000 to Market Square.

In 2000, Sundown in the City was given its name and expanded to four concerts. And, in 2001, Sundown was awarded a grant by the city of Knoxville and expanded to a full, springtime series. With help from several corporate sponsors, the event now takes no municipal funds.

The event has provided a boon to many downtown businesses with restaurants and bars filling both before and after the concerts begin.

In addition to giving local audiences a chance to see nationally and sometimes internationally known music artists, it has traditionally given acclaimed local acts wide exposure by opening for headlining acts. On May 7, the entire show will be made up of local acts — the Royal Bangs, Same As It Ever Was and the Tenderhooks.

Parking is free at city garages at Locust Street, Market Square and State Street after 6 p.m.

From the pics - there are some real role models for your youth, already in trouble.

Are they going to let the famous "downtown developers" out of prison for the event?

Change the culture folks, and what you support, and you change young minds into productive thinking!

Man WisdomBlessed - get out much?

Please tell us, what from the pictures indicates they would start, or would be in trouble? From what I've known and read, these "artists" have been pretty successful (which is why they're headlining) ;)

Give me a break - Somehow I get the feeling that most people disgusted w/ this lineup wouldn't be happy unless Joel Osteen was singing in Market Square

Gavin Rossdale is more than talent, and is more than a role model. Hell, he's close friends with Roger Federer lol. Unless you're saying Tennis isn't a sport to look up to. Plus, tennis players don't wear belts either

Are you serious??? I hope your kids aren't as judgmental as you are. Who are you to say dressing a certain way is setting a bad example? The more cultured our children are the better. I'm more involved in our kids lives than you could ever imagine ;) At least I'm not some dead-beat dad that spends my weekend "drinking w/ the guys" or playing golf like most losers around here.

Also, I'm not "affected" or condemned for saying hell. Last I checked it's listed in the dictionary. Don't tell me you don't let your kids reference the dictionary either!! You need to lighten up and realize everyone in this world doesn't have to live like you.

Geez it's like we're on our own little episode of Wife Swap lol

It depends on your idea of success. If you're home reading this, unless you're retired or independently wealthy, you probably won't understand the concept.

Having a lot of money because fools pay for your records and appearances to listen to your noise is not my idea of success. Whether it is Amy-Divorce Grant or this loser, "Shooter", holding up his worn out britches (supposedly to look "cool")and of course, TrampStamp Brittany.

Why these misfits want to look like hoodlums or psycos to sell their rattle is still beyond me. We should be way past the 60s by now, and that includes these hicks with their cut-off sleeves and comboy hats twanging about some drunk chick!

But, Liddy and Madoff need haircuts, and they ripped us all off of millions, too!

Did I hit all the right hot buttons?

Why don't you set an example for your kids. Unless they are morons they will know it is all an act and entertainment, life is about variety, if everyone were Baptist how boring would life be...

Etacovda_00 writes:

Success comes in a variety of ways, not just what you think wisdom. Take me for example, I hit two of your examples! I'm at home reading this and independently wealthy!! As an artist and business owner my creative background speaks for itself, and from my hard work so does my bank account :)

I'll leave you with a quote I live by (from Ann Landers)

"The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good"

Great perspective and advise.

But we don't need to project a "drug addict" image to Knoxville young people, they have enugh of that in the schools and on the streets. That doesn't need a defense.

Advocate-etacovdA speaks the truth. Judging an entertainer based upon your dislike for his dress and or hair is much like tasting food with your eyes. We should all be more open to judge less and laugh more. We shall all be judged in the end - and if not, isnt that truly the final judgement?

Is Gavin Rosdale wearing a Snuggie in that pic?
