Comedian Jay Leno was headliner at Stars on Stage 2009, a fundraiser for the historic Tennessee Theatre, which began with a VIP reception and silent auction in the lobby. Just before the performance, Sam Furrow conducted a "lively" auction from the stage which included a Broadway trip and dinner for 10 on the theater's stage by Northshore Brasserie with wine pairings by Downtown Wine + Spirits. Following Leno's warmly received performance, Furrow returned for another auction, aided by Leno, of a few special items, including a motorcycle donated by Alcoa Good Times and autographed by Leno and a private backstage meeting with Leno.

Present were co-chairs Marleen Davis and Don Bosch with wife Maureen, who recently completed her stint as co-chair of the Dogwood Arts Festival, along with board president Eric Schwartztraub with wife Jodie, managing director Ashley Capps, Ben and Sue Atchley, Brenda Hunter, Trey and Kimberly Dixon Hamilton, Jenny Hines and Tom Jester, Cynthia Moxley and Alan Carmichael, Kim Trent, Mariane Whittemore, Bill Snyder, Mike and Jama Campbell, Diana Morgan, Mickey Mallonee and Greg Dunn.

n The Junior League of Knoxville's spring fundraiser "Filly Fling" was a Kentucky Derby-themed party. Though no horses were in sight, guests enjoyed the pastoral beauty of Hilltop Farm, the home of Caesar and Dorothy Stair, and most ladies sported Derby-worthy chapeaus. The money raised supports the League's community projects, such as the Parenting Center, East Tennessee Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Center, Character Counts, Florence Crittenton Agency and others. Winner's Circle co-hosts were the 2008-2009 Board of Directors, All Occasions Party Rentals, Natalie and Jim Haslam, 25-plus-year members Carol Hodges Miller and Patricia Morton, Sarah and Robert Schwalb and Knoxville Pediatric Dentistry. Thoroughbred co-hosts were Chris and Bob Kahn, The BBC and Oldham Insurance. Derby Donors were Barbara and Reuben Pelot, III. Guests included Scott and Leslie Elmore, Michael and Dani Bernard, Tierney Bates and Skimeka Edwards, Ray and Pam Harris, Whitney and Bill Peter, Tammy White, John and Anne Stair, Bo and Minette Townsend, Brian and Kendra Patty, Todd and Stacy Moody.

n Ron and Carolyn Lawrence hosted "The Roasting of the Couchon" at Claypond Farm, their idyllic horse farm, as part of the Knoxville Symphony League's Elegant Dining series. Guests stayed dry under a tent while host "Chef Ron" braved the downpour to tend to the pig. An old log cabin, formerly a smokehouse, which served as the Lawrence's temporary quarters during construction of their home on a nearby hill, sheltered a quartet from the Knoxville Symphony. Just behind the cabin sat another historic structure, once a small post office. Later, guests were amused at the sight of horses curiously inspecting the cars parked in the pasture. Among those attending were Bill and Atie Rotmeyer, Jim and Kay Clayton, Jim and Carol Cortese, Linda Parrent, Paula Tate, Georgiana Vines, Terry Finnerty, Gil and Edie Volk, Avery and Janice Phillips, Paul and Tina Hatcher, Jay and Joanne Mounger, Willene Chalmers, Jacqueline Newman and Rose Moseley.

n The 4th and Gill home of Nancy Young and Jeff Talman was the setting for a "meet and greet" with Rep. Allyson Schwartz, D-Pa., Young's sister, who was in town to serve as the keynote speaker for J-Serve, a national day of community service for Jewish teens at Arnstein Jewish Community Center. Schwartz discussed her committee activities and responsibilities, and answered questions about everything from Afghanistan, Iraq and Israel to the Reinvestment Act, health care, higher education and the death penalty. Among the guests were Nissa Dahlin-Brown, Pat Rosenberg, Marilyn and Harvey Liberman, Barbara and Bernie Bernstein, Natalie Robinson, Wendy Pitts Reeves, Rich Kaplan, Beth and Rob Heller, Chyna Brackeen and Darrien Thomson, Stephanie and Eric Bank, Ellen Schnoll and Terry Haywood, Karen Holst and Jon Shefner and Arnold Cohen.
