"V" is marking the spot in Knoxville.
The ABC sci-fi series is holding its own against Knoxville's new favorite program, CBS's "NCIS."
With positive reviews and good word of mouth beforehand, the first episode of "V," airing Nov. 3, scored an impressive 9.2 rating - good enough for second-place against "NCIS" (which easily gets a 16.0 rating or better most weeks).
Comparatively, NBC's "The Biggest Loser" can get around a 7.0 rating many weeks (for third place in its time slot).
On Tuesday of this week, the second episode of "V" slid a bit, but still managed an 8.2 (the bad news: That number was nearly half the audience that "NCIS" had that same night here.).
"V," which will only air four episodes before disappearing from the schedule for several weeks, is emerging as a true hit in this market.
"NCIS: Los Angeles," which can be seen at 9 p.m. Tuesdays in CBS, is Knoxville's biggest new series for the fall. The cops drama, following the original "NCIS," can maintain a 12.0 rating or so most weeks. Rounding out Tuesday nights, newcomer "The Good Wife" is a solid contender for the second most-popular new series of the fall here.
Also fairly hot and new this season: NBC's "Mercy," normally winning the 8 p.m. Wednesdays time period.
"Mercy" is usually pulling around the same numbers that "V" has been doing around here, putting them in a virtual tie for the third most popular new network series in Knoxville during primetime.
n Shuffling. Kiss ABC's "Eastwick" goodbye. What's that, you say? You have not gotten around to watching it yet? That's why it's getting the axe.
"Eastwick" is going because of low ratings. However, ABC plans to air all 13 episodes that it ordered of the show based on the hit film of a million years ago called "The Witches of Eastwick."
ABC is mulling what to do with the time slot once "Eastwick" plays out. Many expected the final season of "Lost," coming early in 2010, to inherit the 10 p.m. Wednesdays real estate. But, hold on. It may not be so easy.
ABC is also looking at moving the struggling "Ugly Betty" from 8 p.m. Fridays to the time slot.
If that happens, where will "Lost" go? So far, no one knows.
Perhaps ABC will clear out two of its new sitcoms on Wednesday night, but that's doubtful. ABC is gaining ground, both in ratings and with critics, with the comedy line-up of "Hank," "The Middle," "Modern Family" and "Cougar Town."
