KNOXVILLE It has been slow going for Knoxville band Faux Ferocious, who after two years in existence has made a number of recordings, none of which have been released to the public. The band looks to change that after a recent mixing session in Nashville for a forthcoming EP.
The music of Faux Ferocious packs a rock 'n' roll wallop. Garage rock in nature, the band compiles what could be climaxes to most songs into succinct, high-energy, pop-length tracks. With song structures simple in nature, the band excels in applying potential solos as brief flashes between verses, exhibiting its musical potential without allowing any over-embellishment to derail the songs' direct and explosive impact.
With three-quarters of the band hailing from Nashville, Faux Ferocious returned to its former home for the mixing of its first release. Working with De Novo Dahl's Joel Dahl, the band polished its forthcoming and as-yet untitled four-track EP, which will be the group's first recording made available for purchase.
"We have done some recording but never released any of it," says guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Phillips. "With that being said, we just finished mixing an EP on Friday that will be released very soon after the mastering process. It is four songs, and we will try to get eight more done by the end of the year.
"Our friend put us in contact with a guy by the name of Joel J. Dahl, and we recorded at his house in Nashville. It was a departure from our last work in that we did a far more complete job, but it was still guerilla style. We got in the studio late on a Friday, stayed until 5 a.m., slept for a few hours and went back to work. We are efficient."
The group hopes to follow up the EP with a full-length album in early 2010. Having used an unusual array of percussion instruments used on the EP, the full length promises to delve even further into such experimentation.
"Reid (Cummings, drummer) was able to go back and add things like bells and tambourine," Phillips says of the band's recent recording. "We also used a kazoo. The songs are great. We will have more done by the end of the year. All of these will be put together for a full length release early next year. We also want to record in a moving vehicle with the kinds of instruments you might find in a pre-school music class."
Having ventured outside its Knoxville/Nashville comfort zone only twice to date, Faux Ferocious hopes its imminent releases will fuel the band to hit the road early and often next year.
"Our goals are to avoid fighting, make music we like, get people to listen to it and give us money for it, so we can keep doing it," says Phillips. "So far we have played in Richmond, D.C., Knoxville and Nashville - but no real touring. We want to. We all love the open road and really smelly vehicles."
Saturday night Faux Ferocious is set to take the stage at Preservation Pub along with other acts to be announced. The show is slated to kick off around 10 p.m., and admission is $5.
