Morrow: 'The Prisoner' (kind of like a 'Lost' for the hippie era) returns on AMC

Oh, so that’s what it was all about.

Many were caught off-guard when “The Prisoner” aired in 1967. It was nonlinear television full of symbols and deeper meanings — sort of like “Lost” for the hippie era. “The Prisoner” was a statement about the Cold War and international instability.

Now, a reimagining of “The Prisoner” offers a fresh take and an accessible telling of personal freedom vs. the greater good. The three-night, six-hour miniseries (airing 8 p.m. EST Sunday, Monday and Tuesday on AMC) stars Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellen.

Caviezel plays dislodged New Yorker Michael, who wakes up in a desert and comes upon a nice-enough-looking “Village” — and it’s not the one in New York City. Once there, he finds out he’s no longer Michael. He’ll be called, simply, Six.

McKellen is the leader who goes by the name of Two. He’s a weasel, a guy who is perfectly in command and shows no cracks in his facade. But he clearly has more going on.

Six is determined to get home — even if it means playing a very deadly game of dodge ball.
