Robin Williams' heart problems earlier this year is the reason Knoxville is getting a special screening of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" tonight.
Originally, Variety of Eastern Tennessee, the charity organization throwing this evening's event, had anticipated booking Williams and Ben Stiller in conjunction with their movie "Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian." The screening for that movie was slated for this past May. But when Williams needed heart surgery, Variety was forced to go another route. So the group started looking at what hot movies were being released this fall.
"Of course, 'New Moon' jumped right off the page to the Variety officers," says Dena Pinsker, executive director of Variety. "Regal has an excellent relationship with (the movie's production company). So a call was made. It was so easy. It was almost funny."
Rumors are afloat that other stars might show. One story has it that "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson may pop up, even though he is not among the celebrities announced to be there. Pinsker says Pattinson is not listed on the jet itinerary that lists the two stars who are coming - Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart.
"He is clearly not attending," she says of Pattinson.
Another report says Taylor Swift may crash the event because she is reportedly dating Lautner. "We've never had another star or celebrity attend with who we are bringing in," Pinsker says.
No matter who will show up, "New Moon" is a guaranteed hit even before the first scene hits the screen. The film will play for the public at midnight on Thursday into Friday morning on all 18 screens at the Regal Cinemas' Pinnacle 18 at Turkey Creek. Those showings are already sold out.
A 2:55 a.m. showing on Friday has been added. During the daylight hours, "New Moon" will be on six screens beginning at 9:50 a.m. Friday at Pinnacle 18.
