While Knoxville act Your Favorite Hero released its first EP in 2003, early fans probably would not recognize the group today either by its lineup or its music. With only guitarist/vocalist Brian Baldwin remaining, Your Favorite Hero has undergone perpetual lineup changes and musical evolutions during its relatively long career, but now has solidified the roster necessary to reach its goals. With tenacity unmatched by most of its pop-punk peers, the band now prepares to record its fourth release and commence touring.

It is strange to think that a band in existence for six years could still be finding its sound, but with its perpetual roster changes, Your Favorite Hero's releases have run a gamut within the pop-punk genre with only the vocals distinguishing it from the pack. With its most recent addition, drummer Dave Neubauer, the band hopes to record what will be something of a foundation for its work to come. With trust in its current roster, YFH credits collaboration for the strength of its latest material.

"We are currently in the process of writing new material to demo out for our next release," says guitarist Blake Williams. "This is the first time that we have taken the 'all hands on deck' approach to writing. Whereas before it was more or less a compilation of songs that had been floating around for months, sometimes up to a year, this go around the creative process is more fun. It's easier, more motivated and an all around a better work environment for everyone in the band."

"This will be our first time writing and recording with Dave as our drummer," bassist Jake Jones adds, "so the songs will come across as more powerful due to his style of drumming. With what we're writing now, all the best aspects of our previous recordings will come together in the best, most thought out songs that we have done to date."

Due to its tendency to play all-ages shows, Your Favorite Hero is frequently lumped in with the all-ages scene, most often noted for its fly-by-night high school bands and a propensity for angsty metal. While most of these young bands disintegrate from a commitment level that falls short of its lofty dreams. The band deserves a look from more weathered fans and will likely receive increased adult attention given that many of the minors it played to during its formative years are now of legal drinking age.

"A lot of bands have come and gone, but we're still here," Williams says. "We have been through things that most bands would have packed up and quit over. We've taken everything that has been thrown at us and turned it into something positive."

"I think with these next songs we'll be able to focus more on getting the attention of other parties and possibly getting more exposure to bigger audiences," Jones adds. "This is the best that we've sounded since the beginning of the band. These songs will reflect the best aspects of our band regarding lyrical content and musicianship to date. If you didn't like Your Favorite Hero before, you may be more inclined to like us now. If you were already a fan of the band, then you definitely won't be disappointed."

EMPTY GESTURE: Barley's Taproom hosts Big Country's Empty Bottle Monday night. The show is scheduled to kick off at 10 p.m.

THE BUCK STOPS HERE: Nashville's Joe Buck Yourself makes a stop at 4620 Reinvented Tuesday night. Also slated to appear are Pick Up the Snake and The Ramblin' Gamblers. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are available in advance for $10.
