KNOXVILLE Last week I took a trip down to Bailey's Sports Grill for an evening of Monday night football and to confirm it as my favorite spot to catch the game and grab a drink in Knoxville. After that article came out, a friend of mine confided in me that he thought BAR Knoxville was a great place to go during UT game days.
I couldn't help but think about how long it had been since I even stepped inside BAR — it has never been my type of place. However, my curiosity was piqued, particularly because I had never actually been to BAR on a game day.
Located nearly in the center of the Cumberland Strip, BAR Knoxville is the epicenter for the average college student who likes to drink and dance. Usually full of young females and the fine gentlemen interested in said females, BAR Knoxville does attract a hedonistic crowd.
This game day, as it turns out, was not nearly as bad as I expected. This isn't to say that I had a particularly good time, but when BAR is more about football than who you might try to hook up with that night, the place is certainly more fun.
BAR is definitely equipped for the game with what seems like at least 20 TVs. There are a few of the typical bar-style videogames as well as pool tables if you are looking for added entertainment. As the sun goes down BAR becomes more about dancing (read: rub all over each other) than anything else.
For what it's worth, BAR is equipped with 'the largest dance floor on the UT Strip,' bubble machines, foam machines, stripper poles and much more. They also allow women to dance on the bar, though the only time I've had the joy to witness this it also involved a middle-aged man trying to slip a young woman one dollar bills.
I didn't discover any really amazing game-day specials, and I paid $3 for a Bud Light. The bar was crowded and I didn't have the opportunity to ask a bartender about everything they had to offer, but I can say it is safe to assume that most domestics are available either on draft or bottle, and liquor is readily available.
BAR does offer some decent specials through the week. Thursdays are home to the 3-2-1 special, which offers $3 Jager, $2 vodka drinks and $1 bottle or draft beer. Friday night is college night: There is no cover with a college ID, plus $10 Bud Light buckets, $2 shooters, half price doubles and $5 liquor pitchers. Saturday is ladies night and includes $3 Sex on the Beach, $4 Jack and Cokes, $2 Michelob Ultra and women 18-plus are admitted free all night. Sunday is free beer night and also offers $3 well drinks and no cover.
In the three times I've ever stepped inside BAR Knoxville, I can safely say that it is not the place for me. I doubt I will be back, but obviously that is of no loss to BAR since they are consistently packed, especially throughout the weekends. If any of this sounds like fun, don't be afraid to check out BAR Knoxville.
