With the Volunteers in the Swamp this weekend, Knoxville is the site of a variety of events for folks staying in Tennessee.

Translation to anyone unfamiliar with fall in Knoxville - the University of Tennessee football team has traveled to Gainesville, Fla., to play a game of football with the University of Florida Gators. Since kickoff is at 3:30 p.m., even Volunteer fans glued to televisions at game time can enjoy a September event - or two - in Knoxville. Here are a few from which to select:

You don't have to worry about game time if you go to Ijams Nature Center, 2915 Island Home Ave., for its 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, "Owl Prowl." Register at 865-577-4717, Ext. 10. The prowl is free for Ijams members, $5 for non-members. It's held in conjunction with the community-wide "Big Read" program that features the novel "Bless Me, Ultima." In that book an owl follows a person with healing powers.

Knoxville's downtown Market Square is the location for a celebration of Hispanic heritage and culture. The 10th HoLa Festival is 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. There's no admission but organizers ask each person to bring a can of beans or bag of rice for Second Harvest Food Bank. The festival includes Hispanic food, crafts, arts and music. Some children's activities have fees. One 11 a.m.-6 p.m. activity allows children and their families to pick up "passports" and then "travel" to Latin America, Spain and the Caribbean by visiting sections set up to represent those areas and countries. Children's Latina character Dora the Explorer visits 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Dora the Explorer visits the Knoxville Zoo noon-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20. Meeting and greeting Dora at the zoo is part of general admission of $16.95 for adults, $12.95 for children and senior citizens.

More food and dancing are at the 30th annual Greekfest, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sept. 18 and Sept. 19, 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 20 at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church, 4070 Kingston Pike. Admission is $2 for adults, free for ages 12 and younger.

The third annual John Sevier Arts and Crafts Show is 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 19-20 at Marble Springs, 1220 W. Gov. John Sevier Highway. The event includes arts and crafts and demonstrations of such 18th-century work as spinning, blacksmithing and tomahawk-throwing. There's also music and tours of the farm house of John Sevier, Tennessee's first governor. Contests include a hat race, cast-iron frying pass toss and tomahawk throw. Admission is $1; contests also have fees.

The Tennessee Valley Fair at Chilhowee Park ends this weekend. Hours are 3 p.m.-midnight Sept. 18, 10 a.m.-midnight Sept. 19, noon-midnight Sept. 20. Tickets are $9 for adults, $7 senior citizens, $5 ages 6-11. Children ages 5 and younger get in free.

When fall arrives many East Tennessee gardeners enjoy yard work more. The University of Tennessee Gardens off Neyland Drive offers plants for fall at its 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 19 plant sale.
