FIRST FRIDAY ART

A reception for artists Steve Smith and Marjorie Horne will be 5:30-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at the Art Market Gallery, 422 S. Gay St.

Smith will display his wood carvings. Horne's exhibit will include paintings and drawings.

BLUE MOTHER TUPELO

Regional blues favorite Blue Mother Tupelo will entertain at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Lyric Theatre, 320 Grove St., Loudon.

The core of the group is the soulful duo of Ricky and Micol Davis, from left below, on vocals and guitar, respectively. The pair recently celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary. Their latest CD is "Heaven & Earth."

'THE AFRICAN QUEEN'

Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart star in the 1951 film classic "The African Queen," showing at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, at the Tennessee Theatre, 604 S. Gay St.

Knoxville-born James Agee wrote the screenplay for this adventure set during World War I. Bogart plays the captain of a small boat on a remote African river who helps Hepburn's character escape the Germans and strike a small blow for the good guys.

Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for ages 12 and younger.

MITCH EASTER

Veteran alterna-pop singer-songwriter Mitch Easter will perform with the Tim Lee 3 at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Pilot Light, 106 E. Jackson Ave.

Easter made a name for himself in the 1980s with the band Let's Active. Since then he has become a sought-after record producer and continues to record and perform his own tunes.

Admission is $5.

MADRE & THE BORDER LIONS

Knoxville rock band Madre will join The Border Lions, from Athens, Ga., in concert at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at Preservation Pub, 28 Market Square.

While seeming to have a happy life, Gilbert realizes she needs something different and sets out to learn about good food, spirituality and true love.

The cast of the PG-13-rated film also includes Javier Bardem, Billy Crudup and James Franco.

Sylvester Stallone, left, wrote, directed and stars in the new film "The Expendables," scheduled to open Friday, Aug. 13, in area theaters. In the action-packed tale, Stallone and a slew of other tough-guy favorites must band together on a mission to blow a bunch of stuff sky high. The cast of the R-rated feature also includes Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin and Mickey Rourke.

MUSIC AT THE COVE

The Air National Guard Band of the Smoky Mountains will entertain 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at The Cove at Concord Park, 10901 S. Northsore Drive.

'SWOPERA'

As part of the Carpetbag Theatre's ongoing 40th Homecoming Celebration, the company will present "Swopera" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, and Sunday, Aug. 15, at the Knoxville Botanical Gardens, 2743 Wimpole Ave.

"Swopera" is a spoken-word opera about "familial history, internal epiphany and collective responsibility" with a mix of jazz and hip-hop music.
