Americana-rock singer-songwriter Scott Miller, left, is one of Knoxville's favorites, and with good reason. He does a fine job at his craft and it's taken him all over the land. His band The Commonwealth was the house band on Jeff Foxworthy's "Blue Collar Comedy TV."

SMOKIN' DAY FESTIVAL

The second annual Smokin' Day Festival will be 4-10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at Sweet P's Barbecue and Soul House, 3725 Maryville Pike.

Festivities will include barbecue (of course), a banana pudding eating contest, games and live music. Performers will include Aftah Party, The Naughty Knots, The Three Uncles and Kevin Buchmeier.

'THE AMERICAN'

George Clooney plays the title character in the new adventure-thriller "The American," opening Wednesday, Sept. 1, in area theaters. Clooney plays an international assassin (and, one assumes, a "man of mystery") who hides out in Italy while pulling one last hit. Along the way, he meets a lady (Violanta Placido, left) and they get all snuggly while dodging bullets. The film is rated R.

KNOXVILLE OPERA COMPANY

Conductor Brian Salesky and two singers from the Knoxville Opera Company will offer a preview of the coming opera season at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, at the Blount County Pubic Library, 508 N. Cusick St., Maryville. Performances this season will include Puccini's "Madame Butterfly," Massenet's "Manon" and Bellini's "I Purita." Admission is free.

'GOING THE DISTANCE'

Justin Long and Drew Barrymore star in the new romantic comedy "Going the Distance," opening Friday, Sept. 3, in area theaters. The two play a couple who launch a romance even though they know they will soon be on opposite sides of the country. They decide to try staying together "long-distance." Unexpectedly, problems arise.

The R-rated film also stars Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis.

LOVE AT THE LYRIC

Knoxville musician Oona Love and guest John Gilmore will perform in a "Breast Cancer Awareness" concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at the Lyric Theatre, 320 Grove St., Loudon. Admission is $15. For info, call 865-458-9020.

BOOMSDAY, BLUEGRASS AND BARBECUE

The annual Boomsday, Bluegrass and Barbecue Celebration will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, at the historic Mabry-Hazen House, 1711 Dandridge Ave.

Festivities will include tours of the house, food, live music and views of the Boomsday fireworks.
