The Knoxville Jazz Orchestra presents A Swingin' Christmas with guest artist organist Dan Trudell at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, at the Tennessee Theatre.

Jazz organist/pianist Trudell will perform classic Christmas favorites in the styles of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and Stan Kenton. A Hammond B-3 specialist, Trudell has been a KJO guest artist for previous concerts, lugging his 400-pound organ from his home in Wisconsin with the help of a wheelchair lift on his van.

Trudell began playing classical organ as a child, but he switched solely to piano when he went to college, he told News Sentinel music writer Wayne Bledsoe when he was in town in 2004.

"I wasn't planning on playing the organ again," he says. "Then my sister called up one day and said, 'There's an organ for sale in want ads in the paper.' It was so cheap that I bought it."

Trudell performs with his funk/jam group the B3 Bombers featuring the original "funky drummer" from James Brown fame, Clyde Stubblefield, as well as doing solo shows.

He is the piano chair in the Chicago Jazz Orchestra and has performed as a sideman with Aretha Franklin, Kenny Burrell, Ron Carter, Benny Golson and others.

Tickets are $32.50 and on sale at all Tickets Unlimited Locations, by phone at 865-656-4444, online and The Tennessee Theatre Box Office.
