Widespread Panic performed the first of three sold-out performances at the Tennessee Theatre on Monday.

Each of the three shows will feature an entirely different set of music.

The group formed in Athens, Ga., in 1986. By the early 1990s the group had found success on the Southeastern college circuit and became the premier 'jam band' of the South.

Fans dubbed themselves 'Spreadheads' and traded tapes of live performances with the band's blessing. In 2002, the group was the first headline act at the inaugural Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenn.

In an interview earlier this month, Widespread Panic drummer Todd Nance said the band's performance philosophy has helped it hold on to fans and stay enthusiastic about performing in concert:

'We keep trying to give people something different. We don't play the same show twice. We've never really phoned it in. ... We're not doing the same thing every night, so we're not bored to death. A lot of people don't have that luxury. I think that's why we've done 3,000-plus shows. If you were playing the same show every night you'd probably get a little bit tired of it.'

I saw a number of the "Spreadheads" downtown last night. They were in New York City last week and got a big write up in the NY Times, yesterday, so this is a pretty big deal for Knoxville. The downtown music scene here has to be one of the best anywhere. I live downtown and write a blog about daily life here and VERY often write about music.
