— Sheryl Crow’s new album, 100 Miles From Memphis, taps directly into the sound and spirit of ’60s-’70s soul and R&B, but the Middle Tennessee-based rock/pop star’s latest move was first inspired by a classic album of another era — her own 1993 breakthrough Tuesday Night Music Club.

“It’s fun to look back at some your old stuff and dig through some of the material that never came out,” says Crow, who did that recently for a deluxe re-release of Tuesday Night. “Every record is sort of a snapshot of who you are in your life. It brought back a lot of memories, and it really did wake up something in me that made me want to go back and re-investigate my earliest influences.”

Those influences included the classic ’60s Stax/Atlantic soul that was put to tape in Memphis — 100 miles from her hometown of Kennett, Mo. — as well as the sweet and socially conscious R&B of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Al Green. Crow says they inspired her to write songs that “just feel good, are emotional and sensual and don’t require you showing up with your cerebral muscles flexed.”
