Celebrate summer's last hurrah with fun area happenings

To start with a cliche, where has summer gone? Despite the mid-summer hot, hot temperatures burning East Tennessee, it's nearly August. And with August comes back to school, regular bedtimes for the kids and a general lack of good-time fun and all-round laziness. It is probably still going to feel like July.

That's why Dollywood Nights sounds like one of those last efforts at summer fun.

The Pigeon Forge theme park hosts "Dollywood Nights" Aug. 2-8. The evenings bring extended hours and a special price evening ticket. The park is open until 10 p.m. during Dollywood Nights, and most of its rides continue to operate. That means taking a spin on roller coasters like Thunderhead and Mystery Mine in the dark.

If you wait until the late afternoon to go to the park during Dollywood Nights, you can get in from 5-10 p.m. for $25, plus tax, admission at the front gate. Dollywood opens at 10 a.m. daily except on Saturday when it opens at 9 a.m. during Aug. 2-8

Some other things happening as July turns into August:

Air conditioning, Gregory Peck and popcorn. The Tennessee Theatre continues its annual Summer Movie Magic classic film series with "To Kill a Mockingbird." Shows are 8 p.m. Friday, July 30, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, at the 604 S. Gay St. theater.

"Mockingbird," based on Harper Lee's only and Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, ranks 34 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 Greatest American films.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for children ages 12 and younger or senior citizens 60 and older. Tickets are at the theater box office or at www.tennesseetheatre.com

August's First Friday events in downtown Knoxville on Aug. 6 include the opening of the "Top Choice Exhibition" at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay St. There is a 5-9 p.m. reception for the exhibit that includes work by 27 artists from Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and Ohio. "Top Choice" is up through Aug. 27.

A few steps up Gay Street, the University of Tennessee Downtown Gallery hosts its First Friday 5-9 p.m. public reception for "Through a Transparent Lens Inside Out." The exhibit at the 106 S. Gay St. gallery includes film, multi-image and video work by award-winning artist and UT art professor Norman Magden. The exhibit is up through Aug. 14.
