I love that there’s hip-hop at Bonnaroo. I wish there was a lot more of it. There are few things I’m looking forward to seeing more this weekend than Jay Electronica, and Kanye West’s 2008 performance – even if it was delayed for two hours – remains one of my best Bonnaroo memories.
But of course, West’s set was plagued with problems, and I couldn’t help but draw parallels as I and several hundred irritated fans waited a good half hour past set time for Wale to take the stage Thursday night. It’s clear that thousands of Roo attendees are all about seeing some rappers, but I’m thinking there are definitely some swagger adjustments required for guys like Wale if they want to make it in Manchester.
Sure, if you’re playing in a club, taking your sweet time to hit the stage is expected and practically a live hip-hop custom – but it’s just not kosher here.
