A lot of tales are being told in East Tennessee next week. Some will be played out by Nickelodeon characters in a stage show. Others will be related by East Tennessee storytellers.
Let’s begin with the stage show “Nickelodeon Presents Storytime Live!” at the Tennessee Theatre. Show times are 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, and 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18. Tickets range from $17.75 to $39.75.
“Storytime” is a show for the preschooler set and their families. It’s a musical that features the characters and stories from four Nickelodeon programs — “Dora the Explorer,” “The Backyardigans,” “Ni Hao, Kai-lan” and “Wonder Pets!”
The 90-minute show includes songs from the four television programs as well as other tunes written for the stage production. Each show and its characters perform their own storyline.
Dora turns into a princess in Fairytale Land to save Boots the monkey from a witch’s sleeping spell. Kai-lan of “Ni Hao, Kai-lan” gets to meet her favorite superhero, “The Monkey King,” and attend a party at his castle.
The Backyardigans’ tale involves a Festival of Dirt and a tale with a Robin Hood spin. The Wonder Pets end up in the fictional Wonderland as they have a birthday celebration with the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts.
Different stories will be told at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 20, at the Clayton Center for the Arts on the Maryville College campus. March 20 is “World Storytelling Day” so the center will be the site of stories told by local tellers. Tickets are $5 and available at the center box office.
Storytellers attending include Kathleen Mavournin of Knoxville and Ruthie McIntyre of Farragut. Other tale-tellers also are part of the Smoky Mountain Storytellers Association. Those storytellers include Susan Fulbright of Kodak, Rick Elliot of Gatlinburg and Millie Sieber of Maryville. Siber is a resident artist at the Clayton Center.
Also participating in the event will be Kate Agmann of Jonesborough, Guerry McConnell and Rela Edwards of Rogersville, and Finn Bille and Judy Baker from Cleveland, Tenn.
