CHICAGO - Jay Baruchel had mixed feelings when DreamWorks approached him to play the lead character in the comedy "She's Out of My League." On one hand, it was the starring role. On the other, they wanted him to play a character who is so awkward and unattractive his friends and family can't believe he landed a beautiful girlfriend.

"I was like, 'I'm flattered you guys would like to hire me, but I'm kind of insulted,' Baruchel said recently while promoting the film with co-star Nate Torrence. "The first draft of the script had even more references to how repulsive I am. I sounded like a Garbage Pail Kid.

"But hey, it ended up paying my mother's rent."

Speaking of dear ol' mom, Baruchel was asked to go bottomless for a "grooming" scene but declined because he didn't want his mother to see him naked, among other reasons.

"If they really wanted me to show my (butt), they should have asked that question when they were deciding how much money they were going to pay me," said Baruchel, who helped select the body double used in his place. "I ended up getting (butt) approval. I saw four (butts) on an iPhone and said 'Yeah, that one." '

Torrence didn't have the luxury of a double in the scene, which features his character, Devon, helping Baruchel's character, Kirk, with his pre-date manscaping. The Second City alum, whom you may remember from the Capital One credit card commercials with David Spade, called the experience "the worst day of filming of my life."

"I was lucky everything was covered up, but it was tough," Torrence said. "They kept saying 'Nate, we need you to get closer with the razor. It doesn't look real.' "

On the poster for the film, which hits theaters Friday, the tagline reads, "How can a 10 go for a 5?" - a reference to the female lead's "10 out of 10" looks and Kirk's status as a "5."

"The gist of the movie is that the ratings system is for the birds," Baruchel said.

So you're saying you're a 7?

"I'm saying I'm a (bleeping) 10, bro," responded Baruchel.
