Knoxville native Didi Benami “got dark” in her performance Tuesday night on “American Idol” with her rendition of the Rolling Stones’ song “Play With Fire.”

Benami, who now lives in Los Angeles, got good reviews from the judges.

Randy Jackson said she was “on fire” and that it was one of her best performances so far, while Ellen DeGeneres said she “sounded great.”

Judge Kara DioGuardi said Benami sang with “intensity” and “got dark.” Last week’s performance coupled with Tuesday’s song were “two steps in the right direction,” DioGuardi said.

Judge Simon Cowell agreed. “You are beginning to show the kind of artist you want to be,” he said. “Very cool choice of song.”

The show’s host Ryan Seacrest introduced Benami with a short segment featuring her mother, Knoxvillian Mary Benami.
