BEST RADIO SPORTS SHOW: SPORTS TALK WITH JOHN WILKERSON AND JIMMY HYAMS, Sports Animal AM 990/FM 99.1/FM 99.3
East Tennesseans can't get enough of football. From September through November it's all we think about. It's as though that orange and white seeps right into our brains.
But that's sensible. There is a lot to process through with those Vols. November alone brings games against Memphis, Mississippi, Vanderbilt and Kentucky. Additionally, there are players to speculate about, interviews with opposing coaches, our infatuation with Derek Dooley and our never-ending rage against Lane Kiffin. And that's not even including the more than a century of Vols' history worth poring over.
Leave it to John Wilkerson and Jimmy Hyams to help us sort through it all. They discuss college football together and with callers on Tennessee's highest-rated sports talk show 3-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 3-7 p.m Tuesday and Thursday. Yeah, yeah, they make a little room for NASCAR and the Tennessee Smokies. But let's not kid ourselves about what's important.
Runners-up: The Wes Rucker Show, ESPN Radio Knoxville 1180 AM; Doc, Jeff and Heather, Sports Animal AM 990/FM 99.1/FM 99.3
BEST RADIO PERSONALITY: MARSHALL & MARISA, LOVE 89.1 FM
If there's one time when everyone needs some encouragement, it's in the morning before work. Life is busy. There are a million things to do. It's a whirlwind of getting ready, eating breakfast, driving the kids to school, not forgetting the briefcase, making sure someone lets the dog out so he doesn't go on the rug again, repeat.
Marshall Stewart and Marisa Lykins would like to remind you that it's OK to slow down. Each morning from 6-10 on listener-supported Love 89.1, they queue up today's hottest Christian music. Featured are the likes of Bebo Norman, Chasen, 33 Miles, Needtobreathe, Britt Nicole, Chris and Conrad, and Starfield. Interspersed throughout the morning are segments like the Morning Motivator, New Release Tuesday, Plugged-In Movie Review, Chick Chat and Homeward Snapshot.
The tunes are plentiful; you'll hear a lot more music than on the average radio station. The music is likewise uplifting and "safe for your whole family." It sounds a lot like Top 40, only more Christian. Plus Eminem isn't tying people to the bed and setting the house on fire.
Runners-up: Marc & Kim & Frank, STAR 102.1 FM; Hallerin Hilton Hill, News/Talk 98.7 FM
BEST TV ANCHOR: ROBIN WILHOIT, WBIR-TV
New Orleans five years after Katrina. The aftermath of the oil spill on the Gulf Coast. Shenanigans on the campaign trail with Zach Wamp. A house that produces electricity on 90-plus-degree days.
These are the stories WBIR's Robin Wilhoit tells us about while we eat dinner and just before bed. As co-anchor of WBIR's "Action 10 News" at 6 and 11 p.m., the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduate keeps us informed about the world around us. She's a proponent of WBIR's Buddy Check 10 program to promote breast cancer awareness. She brings it all, the good, the bad and the ugly, and reminds us that even when the world is a scary place, at least there's a friendly face to break the news.
Runners-up: Russell Biven, WBIR-TV; Abby Ham, WBIR-TV
BEST METEOROLOGIST: TODD HOWELL, WBIR-TV
Did you know that there's a mathematical formula for determining wind chill? Yep, it's true. When you need to figure out what the felt air temperature on your skin is due to the wind, simply calculate 35.74 + 0.6215T - 35.75(V^0.16) + 0.4275T(V^0.16), where T is measured in Fahrenheit and V is measured in miles per hour.
Oh, forgot your calculator, thermometer and anemometer? Very sad. Looks like a job for Weather Man.
A bespectacled superhero in a shirt and tie, WBIR Chief Meteorologist Todd Howell tells us which way the wind blows and how cold that wind will be. He lets us know when there will be snow flurries so that we can buy up all the milk and bread at the grocery store, and reminds us not to forget the galoshes. That's better than doing math any old day.
Runners-up: Matt Hinkin, WATE-TV; Mike Witcher, WBIR-TV
BEST SPORTSCASTER: STEVE PHILLIPS, WBIR-TV
Knoxville is a sports town. True, there are no "professional" teams here. But we're thankful for that. We don't know if WBIR sportscaster Steve Phillips would get any sleep if the NFL came to town.
As it is, the Emmy-winning Phillips covers the Vols (football and basketball), high school football, the Tennessee Smokies, NASCAR, the Ice Bears, as well as the U.S.A.'s occasional valiant efforts in the World Cup. He also blogs and tweets for WBIR, and writes about sports for the station's website like nobody's business. Heck, just keeping up with the guy is almost a full-time sport.
Runners-up: Kris Budden, WBIR-TV; Rick Russo, WVLT-TV
