BEST RECORDED MUSIC STORE: THE DISC EXCHANGE

2615 Chapman Highway

In an age where so many stores seem detached and corporate, it feels good to shop at a place that is both independent and local. The Disc Exchange has been serving Knoxville that way for more than two decades.

What's especially welcoming about The Disc Exchange is the selection. It's refreshing to visit a music store that has jazz, bluegrass, gospel, folk, vinyl, and songs by artists other than millionaires who want to be billionaires so freaking bad. You can find Jack White and all 432 of his bands here, not to mention Bodies of Water, Iron & Wine, Over the Rhine, mewithoutYou, the late Vic Chestnutt, Sage Francis, plus local musicians like Todd Steed, Quartjar, Scott Miller and Robinella.

The 12,000-square-foot store also sells DVDs, posters, incense, books, magazine and other merchandise. But it's the music that's a sound for sore ears.

Runners-up: McKay Used Books and CDs, Best Buy

BEST GARDEN/NURSERY: MEADOW VIEW GREENHOUSE AND GARDEN CENTER

9885 Highway 11 E, Lenoir City

Gardening is one of those hobbies that can take some extensive research, skill and equipment before one can get started. Many things must be considered: dirt, shade from trees, the position of the house in relation to the sun during the day, weather patterns, temperature, insects, rodents, pets, neighborhood children and a host of other issues. Daunting, isn't it?

That's when you consult the experts. Meadow View Greenhouse and Garden Center in Lenoir City has them. They are the wizards of sod.

For example, there's Shalena Durkot. Durkot is a landscape designer and consultant. If you'd like, you can get an on-site evaluation, including recommendations of both plant material and layout. Or you can get a full-color landscape design, drawn to scale and personalized for your needs. If you purchase anything recommended during your design or consultation, they'll even give you 10 percent off those materials.

Runners-up: Stanley's Greenhouses & Plant Farm, Mayo Garden Center

BEST FUNERAL HOME: ROSE MORTUARY

1421 N. Broadway and 6200 Kingston Pike

Perhaps no aspect of life is as avoided, feared and misunderstood as death. It's as inevitable as breathing, yet spoken of in hushed, backroom tones.

But facing death doesn't have to be frightening or impossible. When it takes hold of someone you love, what you'll want more than anything is for someone to take your hand and help you along.

Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel and Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel have been working through grief with friends, neighbors and families for 125 years. The family-owned company will assist you in creating a meaningful way to say goodbye, be it a personalized memorial service or a cremation. They are available 24 hours a day before, during and after the service.

Runners-up: Berry Funeral Home, Atchley Funeral Home

BEST POOL/SPA RETAILER: THE POOL PLACE

8100 Kingston Pike in Knoxville and 819 Foothills Mall Drive in Maryville

As amazing as autumn is, it's difficult to say goodbye to summer. No more grilling out, no more swimming in the pool, no more days at the lake receiving the golden kisses of the sun.

But the coming of autumn and winter also gives you ample time to prepare for the installation of your very own swimming pool. Looks like a job for The Pool Place.

This family-owned and operated establishment has been in business since 1953. If you're searching for a permanent above-ground pool, the store carries everything from the more economical Solstice to the eye-catching Reflexion.

If you prefer an in-ground pool, The Pool Place allows you to be the contractor to save on costs and to share a role in the construction. Or you can sit back and let them do all the work.

The Pool Place also sells premium spas, tanning beds, pool and patio furniture, and even billiards tables, allowing you to truly create a backyard summer paradise.

Runners-up: Campbell's Pool & Spa, Tipton Builders

BEST PET SUPPLY STORE: PETSMART

Various locations

Now that Knoxville's City Council has voted to allow hen ownership in the city, we can only hope that some of those chickens make their way into PetSmart on Saturday afternoons. It's fun enough to encounter dogs and their owners strolling around the store. Hens in sweaters on leashes may render us unconscious.

Either way, we'll keep coming to PetSmart for our pet needs. PetSmart will hook you up with a pet if you don't have one. And, once you do, it'll outfit your pooch with food, water, shelter, bedding, grooming and everything else Maslow's hierarchy of needs says she needs for self-actualization.

Runners-up: Agri Feed Pet Supply, Pet Supplies Plus

BEST OUTDOOR OUTFITTERS: BASS PRO SHOPS

3629 Outdoor Sportsmans Place, Kodak

So you've read Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" and now you're ready to hike the Appalachian Trail (the real way, not the Mark Sanford way).

Better get ready. Depending on who you ask the trail is 2,100-2,200 miles long, which is not exactly a stroll, especially when you're at risk of hypothermia, snake bites, bear attacks, rockslides and assaults from shovel-wielding hillbillies named Ezekiel.

Translation? Stop by Bass Pro Shop for everything you'll need for the long tramp through the forest. You'll want pots and pans, water purification, a durable and waterproof tent, a sleeping bag, a knife for stabbing Zeke, waterproof matches, freeze-dried meals, a gun for shooting Zeke, and, probably, a sane person to talk you into camping in your backyard instead of hiking the Appalachian Trail. All of this is conveniently available at Bass Pro Shop. So get to packing.

BEST BOOKSTORE: MCKAY USED BOOKS & CDS

Best Bookstore - McKay

Abby Lawson enjoys a book from her basket of selections at McKay's Used Books and CDs, voted best Best Bookstore in East Tennessee.

McKay Used Books & CDs is the sort of store you visit when you have time to kill. Oh, you might go there when you're specifically after a copy of "The Catcher in the Rye," or if you're looking for all those textbooks in your college syllabi (McKay is an English major's best friend).

But the fun of McKay is the browsing. Because new used items are always being traded in, the selection is constantly changing. That's excellent news for bibliophiles, who are a group of people who enjoy looking at, opening, smelling (it's true, they really do this), leafing through and pondering books as much as they revel in reading them.

Of course, you'll find something good at McKay. But what that goodness will be is mystery that won't be solved until you've walked up and down the aisles for a few hours, doing the "excuse me" dance with other treasure seekers.

Runners-up: Borders Bookstore, Barnes & Noble

BEST MOTORCYCLE DEALER: SMOKY MOUNTAIN HARLEY-DAVIDSON & BUELL

Various locations

You know where you don't see a lot of motorcycles? Indiana, that's where.

Corn and flatness certainly have their appeal (or so we've been told), but such terrain doesn't exactly scream, "Hey, I'm fun and interesting. You should speed through me on a 2000 Harley-Davidson Softail Fat Boy."

The mountains, however, do have that appeal. East Tennessee and western North Carolina have some of the most beautiful scenery in the continental United States, not to mention some of the best riding for bikers.

If you're going to be careening through the mountains on a motorcycle, best to stop at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson first. Made up of two dealerships -- one in Maryville, the other in Pigeon Forge -- and a retail store in Gatlinburg, Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson is a one-stop shop for your biking needs. Purchase or rent a bike, get a tune-up, sign up for instructional courses, then zip off into the wilderness.

On your way back, be sure to stop by The Shed at the Maryville location for some Americana music and barbecue.

Runners-up: Knoxville Harley-Davidson, Cycle One

BEST WINE STORE: BOB'S PACKAGE STORE

220 N. Winston Road

Wine may be the most important beverage there is. Wine is significant in both the Jewish and Christian

religions and was represented by the Greek deity Dionysus and the Roman god Bacchus. Archeologists have discovered wine production in what is now Georgia and Iran dating back to 6,000 B.C. Today wine is used both to enhance European and Mediterranean cuisine and to add flavor to certain cooked dishes.

Bob's Package Store knows a little something about the significance of wine. The store carries a selection of more than 3,200 varieties, from those produced right here in East Tennessee to bottles from Italy, Portugal, Greece, New Zealand and Australia.

Listen to wine manager Roger Killen. He'll guide you toward a 2008 Guicciardini Strozzi Chianti, a 2008 Mustiguillo Mestis or the 2007 Hansen-Lauer Brut Riesling. Then you'll understand why Bob's Package Store is East Tennessee's volume leader.

Runners-up: Ashe's Wines & Spirits, McScrooge's Wines & Spirits

BEST LIQUOR STORE - VARIETY: BOB'S PACKAGE STORE

220 N. Winston Road

Making margaritas for four? You'll need a bottle of that orange-flavored, bright topaz Grand Marnier cognac. You'll also want to pick up some golden Jose Cuervo Especial tequila. Then you'll just need a few limes and some rim salt.

Grand Marnier and Jose Cuervo Especial are just two of the 1,700 spirits that Bob's Package Store has to offer. Whether you're in the mood for bourbons, vodkas or scotches, this West Knoxville establishment will point you in the right direction. They've been doing so for 38 years, so there's no turning back now.

Runners-up: Ashe's Wines & Spirits, McScrooge's Wines & Spirits

BEST GOLF STORE: DALE'S WINNING EDGE

9145 Cross Park Drive

What's the best thing you can do to improve your game? More practice? Lessons from Tiger Woods? Adjustments to your back swing? Choking up on your pitching wedge? Stretching? Eating protein before you play? Staying hydrated?

None of those are bad suggestions. But it could also be that you don't have the proper equipment for your individual golf game. You're a unique person, after all. You have your own posture, your own swing and your own tendencies. You're like a snowflake, but with checkered pants and a funny hat. So why not have clubs fitted to match?

Dale's Winning Edge offers a custom club-fitting service that will benefit your game, whether you're a novice or a veteran. During the process, you'll be interviewed about aspects of your game, measured, and evaluated on your swing, stance, spin rates, ball speed and so on. The result will be clubs tailored just for you, and a game that shows the difference.

BEST BATH PRODUCT BOUTIQUE: BATH & BODY WORKS

Various locations

Everyone has a favorite smell: coffee brewing, freshly cut grass, buttered popcorn, bacon sizzling in the pan, the new car smell, the it-just-rained street smell, warm laundry tumbled by the dryer.

Some of those smells are specific to a particular feeling or a certain context. Not many people dab bacon behind their ears or rub buttered popcorn lotion on their flakey legs.

Best of East Tennessee - Best Bicycle Shop

Biketopia owner Chris Luttrell poses with some of the goods that make his store East Tennessee's Best Bicycle Shop.

At Bath & Body Works, they've determined the scents that people are willing to carry with them. The retail store specializes in lotions, personal care items and home fragrances. There are plenty to go around, too. Submerge your skin in the dewy summer morning of cucumber melon or the rustic blossomy blend of country apple. You'll feel and look soothed and beautiful, and you'll smell even better.

Runners-up: Bath Junkie, Good Scents at Southern Market

BEST BICYCLE SHOP: BIKETOPIA

7328 Norris Freeway

Sometimes what you really want is a specialty store. Yes, you can certainly get a bicycle at a big-box store, sold to you by the guy who was working in the floral department just last week, and in the meat department the week before that. But given that bicycles taste terrible when grilled and that they are far too large for bouquets, that expertise is useless to you.

Wouldn't you rather purchase a bicycle from someone who knows about, say, bicycles?

That's Biketopia for you. The staffers there are avid mountain bikers, road riders, even cycle commuters. They know bikes because they use them, often. Heck, after work on Tuesday evenings, they even go on a 25-30 mile rural bike ride. Those are the folks you want looking after your ride.

They'll do it, too. Stop by for a tune-up, a more extensive overhaul, a brake adjustment, or to purchase a brand new Bianchi Iseo.

Runners-up: Fountain City Pedaler, Greenlee Bike Shop

BEST TATTOO/PIERCING PARLOR: SAINT TATTOO

1020 N. Broadway

Some people jot down notes on pieces of paper. Some people write phone numbers on the backs of their hands. Some people get what they want to remember permanently tattooed on their bodies. At least that's how it worked on "Prison Break."

Best Tattoo/Piercing – Saint Tattoo

Tattoo artist Anna Waychoff, tattoo artist and parlor owner Doc Cooper, and tattoo artist Maya Taborsky, from left, show off some of the work that earned Saint Tattoo the title of "Best Tattoo/Piercing Parlor."

Even if you don't want to spend billions on a top secret-y full body canvas, a tattoo is a good way to mark yourself with something meaningful.

The saints at Saint Tattoo are there to guide you in the spiritual disciplines of inkification and body piercing. Each staff member is an experienced artist who knows his or her craft, both the piercing or inking and the delicate aftercare. They're happy to answer your questions or show you around, and the establishment itself is as clean as it gets.

All that's really left is for you to pick a pretty picture and to hop in the chair.

Runners-up: Mythical Markings, Wicked Ink Tattoo & Body

BEST EYEWEAR SHOP: LUTTRELL'S EYEWEAR

5030 Kingston Pike and 11730 Kingston Pike

Luttrell's Eyewear has two locations: one in Colony Place in Bearden, the other farther west in Farragut. Both shops focus on letting the customer visualize how she looks before and after she's donned new glasses, with a particular eye towards the more fashionable brand names. The goal is to make you look better than ever in a new pair of frames.

Luttrell's carries Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Anne Klein, Maui Jim, Vivid, Ray Ban and other brands. Lens replacement and custom sun-clips services are available, as are eye exams. Luttrell's even does its own lab work, so you know your lenses will be filled correctly, fit well and look even better. After all, not only do you want to see, but you want other people to see how good you look while you're doing it.

Runners-up: LensCrafters, Dr. Bizer's VisionWorld

BEST CONVENIENCE STORE: WEIGEL'S

Various locations

Weigel's now vends an icy treat called Monkey Ice. It's available in four flavors: Monkey Brains (watermelon), Monkey Mush (banana), Monkey Tango (orange) and Monkey Zing (green apple). This may be the greatest piece of news we have ever heard.

It is, however, only one part of the greater whole that is Weigel's.

Originally a family dairy with four cows that sold raw milk at nine cents a gallon, Weigel's opened its first convenience store in 1958. More stores followed, as did fresh, all-Colombian coffee and dark-roast European coffee, nonfat Skim D' Lite milk, seasonal eggnog (it's almost here again!) and pay-at-the-pump gasoline. Plus they sell all the convenience store products you've come to know and love (we're batting our eyelashes at you, beef jerky).

Today Weigel's operates 50 stores in East Tennessee, and the dairy products are still processed at the company dairy right here as well.

Runners-up: Pilot Travel Centers, Walgreens

BEST WIRELESS PHONE SERVICE: VERIZON

Various locations

East Tennesseans aren't the only folks who love Verizon Wireless. Apparently everyone else does, too.

About 50,000 people in 26 major cities responded to a Consumer Reports survey on wireless service last year. Verizon ranked first in all of the cities questioned in that survey, which included New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, Cleveland and Houston. Now that's some major adoration.

Verizon boasts the nation's largest and most reliable network, which includes global coverage in more than 200 countries. That reliable coverage applies to Verizon's 3G network as well. Look at a map of the mobile company's digital coverage and the whole thing is practically red (which means you're covered). Even in Montana.

Verizon also has several excellent plans -- for you, the family or prepaid. Throw in great customer service, lots of useful apps and a commitment to constant innovation, and it's no wonder why East Tennessee and 26 other cities love them so much.

Just remember who loved you first, Verizon.

Buying an engagement ring is a big choice, and not just because of that till death do you part business. There's also the matter of the actual ring. Most men don't know a lot about jewelry.

Fortunately the Markman family does. Harold and Ida Markman opened their first jewelry store in 1976. Today, son Steve Markman travels the world in search of the most brilliant diamonds he can find (hopefully having plenty of Indiana Jones-style adventures along the way).

The Tuckers hold semi-annual consignment sales (the July event took place at 180 N. Peters Road) that are open to the public. Those interested in consigning register through the Jack and Jules website, receive a number and then drop off sale items. Consigners decide how much to charge and whether or not to discount items. Jack and Jules do the rest.
