Virginia Americana band Steel Wheels, left, explores the rootsy musical realm between blues and bluegrass. The group has also been known to travel from gig to gig via bicycle, with their instruments in tow.

FREAKERS BALL

The 12th annual Freakers Ball will open at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at The Valarium. 112 Ramsey St. The dance party will go long into the dark and eerie night, with costume contests, "Bobbing For Body Parts," "Witch Doctor" cocktails bubbling with fog and a bevy of DJs. Music will be spun by The Mash-Up Maestro from Tokyo, DJ Slink, Slim Diesel and DJ Rain. The evening will also feature The VooDoo Dolls and visuals by VJ Toro. Admission is $10.

'THE WITCHES' ACT UP ON HALLOWEEN

"The Witches," a spooky children's play by Roald Dahl, will be performed at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, at the Children's Theatre of Knoxville, 800 Tyson St.

APOCALYPTIC LUNCH

Jack Rentfro's Apocalypso Quartet will blend spoken-word performance with jazz during the WDVX Blue Plate Special noon-1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at the Knoxville Visitors Center, 301 S. Gay St

Celtic fiddler Jamie Lavall and folk musician Francis Wenzel will also perform. The free concert will be broadcast live on WDVX 89.9 and 102.9 FM and online at www.wdvx.com.

DANZIG AND FRIENDS

This past June marked the release of the long-awaited Danzig album "Deth Red Sabaoth," the band's first new-music release since 2004. Fans who have waited to hear Danzig in concert need wait no longer, as well. Namesake singer Glenn Danzig and friends will headline an evening of dark and heavy rock at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, at The Valarium, 112 Ramsey St.

Metal bands Possessed, Marduk, Toxic Holocaust and Withered will open the show. Admission is $29 in advance, $32 at the door. The venue charges a $3 surcharge for patrons younger than 21. For info, visit www.thevalarium.com.

POTLUCK PARTY WITH ABIGAIL WASHBURN

Americana chanteuse Abigail Washburn and special guests will perform in a "residency" series on Wednesdays, Nov. 3-17, at the Relix Variety Theater, 1208 N. Central St.

Clawhammer-banjo ace Washburn first made a splash with the band Uncle Earl and later formed the Sparrow Quartet with Bela Fleck, Ben Sollee and Casey Driessen.

Each evening will feature a 7 p.m. potluck dinner and 8 p.m. performances by Washburn and friends. Admission is free.

Veteran comedian and independent-film director Bobcat Goldthwaite, above left, will entertain at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, and at 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Nov. 5-6, at Side Splitters Comedy Club, 9246 Park West Blvd.

Goldthwaite is known for his raw comedy style and for directing films such as "Shakes the Clown," "Windy City Heat" and "World's Greatest Dad."

Downey plays a father-to-be who shares a cross-country ride with an oddball aspiring actor (Galifianakis) in order to make it home before his wife (Michelle Monaghan) gives birth. The film is rated R.

'MEGAMIND'

Will Ferrell provides the voice for the title-character supervillain in the new animated adventure-comedy "Megamind," scheduled to open Friday, Nov. 5, in area theaters. Megamind succeeds in defeating the Metro City hero Metro Man after many years of trying. He soon finds himself defending the town against a newer, greater threat. The PG-rated film also features the voices of Tina Fey, David Cross, Jonah Hill and Brad Pitt.

CLAIRE LYNCH BAND

Blues ensemble the Claire Lynch Band will entertain at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Palace Theater, 113 W. Broadway, Maryville.

'KATRINA PAINTINGS'

An exhibit of art by Texas artist David Bates titled "Katrina Paintings is on display through Feb. 13, 2011, at the Knoxville Museum of Art, 1050 World's Fair Park Drive.

Bates' art concerns the people and culture of the Gulf Coast, often in a large scale. This exhibit includes the 21-foot-wide painting titeld "The Storm."
