Americana singer-songwriter Sarah Pirkle, left, will entertain with music from her new solo album at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, at the Laurel Theater, 1538 Laurel Ave. at 16th Street.
While Pirkle can often be found performing with husband Jeff Barbra, the Maid Rite String Band, the Naughty Knots and other area groups, she'll take the stage solo this time to present original and traditional songs in her Appalachian style.

VOODOO TEMPLE
Doors open at 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, for the weekly double-trouble duo of dance nights at The Valarium and the Cider House, both located at 112 Ramsey St.
"Voodoo" takes over the Valarium with lights, dancers and special effects such as the "Cryogen-EFX," which sends "plumes of frozen air" onto the dance floor from above.
Next door, the Cider House hosts "Temple," featuring a wide variety of musical styles: 1980s retro, gothic, punk rockabilly, middle eastern, bhangra, showtunes and more.

MINDY SMITH
Americana singer-songwriter Mindy Smith, who used to haunt the open mics and venues of Knoxville's Old City, will return to town once more to enchant the audience at The Square Room, 4 Market Square. Smith's latest album is "Stupid Love."
Sephira, the musical duo of sisters Ruth and Joyce O'Leary, will open the show at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30. Admission is $12.50 in advance, $15 at the door.
'LET ME IN'
Chloe Moretz, left, portrays a young-looking vampire named Abby in the new suspense drama "Let Me In." In the film, Abby befriends a boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee ) who is the chronic target of bullies at his school. The R-rated story is a remake of the Swedish film "Let the Right One In." It is scheduled to open Friday, Oct,. 1, in area theaters.
'THE SOCIAL NETWORK'
The controversies surrounding the birth of Facebook are explored in the new film drama "The Social Network." Justin Timberlake Sean Parker and Jesse Eisenberg plays Facebook inventor Mark Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg was sued by former classmates who claimed that he stole the idea for Facebook from them. The film is rated PG-13. It is scheduled to open Friday, Oct,. 1, in area theaters.
MT. ST. HELENS VIETNAM BAND
The Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, a Seattle indie-rock quintet, will entertain at 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Pilot Light, 106 E. Jackson Ave.
The band has only been around since 2008, but constant touring and expansion of its "frantic" rock style has earned the group notice for its second album, "Where the Messengers Meet."

HANK DAY
WDVX DJ Red Hickey will host the Hank Day Festival 1-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at the Candoro Marble Building, 4450 Candora Ave. at Maryville Pike.
Festivities will include live music, Southern and Cajun cooking and a jambalaya cook-off.
Scheduled performers are Jeff Barbra & Sarah Pirkle, Andy Pirkle, Mitchell Garza, Greg Horne, Rose Hawley, Drew Gilch and other South Knoxville musicians.
