Santa waves to the crowd during the 2010 Christmas parade in downtown Knoxville.
The best advice Katharine Torbett has for folks heading to tonight's WIVK/Fowler's Christmas Parade is logistical.
"We're excited," the WIVK promotions director said. "People should get down there early because traffic is going to be congested."
Torbett said about 100 units ranging from dance troupes, high school bands, Knoxville pageant winners and Cub Scout troops are scheduled to participate. WIVK on-air personalities set to be in the parade include Gunner with horse "Prince," Andy and Alison and Colleen Addair with WIVK the Frog, Torbett said.
Country singer Rodney Atkins will serve as the grand marshal, Torbett said.
City of Knoxville officials said the parade begins at 7 p.m.. The parade will form near the Civic Coliseum, between Garages A and B, and will travel along Hall of Fame Boulevard before turning west up Hill Avenue and then north onto Gay Street. It will conclude at the intersection of Depot and Gay streets.
Free parking is available in city parking facilities downtown, including the Market Square Garage, Locust Street Garage and State Street Garage after 6 p.m. and on weekends.
Kyndra Brewer, deputy director of special events for the city of Knoxville, said the Christmas parade has been going on for 35 years.
"It is just a tradition, and it grows and grows every year," she said.
