A Morristown,Tenn., mother left the "Today" show with a whole new look less than a week ago.

While visiting New York City, Jessica Winstead was selected from the "Today" crowd for an "ambush makeover" segment. Louis Licari and Jill Martin worked their magic on Winstead to give her a new look altogether.

The result can be seen at 11 a.m. Friday on WBIR, Channel 10.

"It was pretty darn cool," Winstead said Tuesday. "My goal was to go to New York and meet Matt Lauer."

But while she was out in the crowd, holding up a sign, she got selected for a makeover. The transformation took a little over three hours to complete and included a layering of her hair and heavier-than-normal makeup.

"The people there were amazingly nice," Winstead said of the "Today" staff.

When she finally got to see herself — it happened for the first time on the air — she was excited. "I was impressed. It showed what a whole lot of makeup and a couple of hairstylists could do," she quipped.

Extreme volunteers

More than 1,600 folks have signed up to help build a home for deserving family when "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" heads to Knoxville next month, organizers said Tuesday.

However, more help is needed.

Volunteers who are skilled in the construction trades are being sought. Also needed are construction and design materials and financial contributions to the "Knoxville Family Build Fund." Money from the fund will be earmarked to help the local family picked for the makeover.

To sign up as a worker or to donate materials or money, go to www. joinextreme.com/tennessee. You also may access that website via the Grace Construction website (www.grace-info.com) or the Moxley Carmichael website (www.moxleycarmichael.com). The site lists the most urgently needed materials and is regularly updated. It allows volunteers to sign up for shifts around the clock.

Financial donations also are being accepted at all branches of Home Federal Bank.
