After 1 year, S&W closed 'until further notice'

Hailed as an example of downtown's revival, the S&W Grand restaurant on Gay Street has abruptly closed "until further notice," according to a sign on the front door Saturday and a message posted on the restaurant's Facebook page.

"We are taking the opportunity during this slow time of the year to determine the future plan for the S&W Grand in 2011," the message reads. "Effective immediately, we will be closed until further notice. We thank everyone for their support over the past year, and remain hopeful to serve you again in the near future."

Efforts to reach the owners of the business at 516 S. Gay St. were unsuccessful.

Stephanie Balest, her brother Brian Balest and Executive Chef Shane Robertson opened the restaurant in October 2009, 28 years after the original cafeteria closed at the same location in 1981.

The proprietors described themselves as a "group of friends who love food and history and are inspired by unique architecture …," according to the restaurant's website.
