Grier Lequire has been a familiar face around Half Barrel, 1829 Cumberland Ave., since the place opened in 2005.

"I was one of the first ones down here," he says. "At the time I was working at Sunspot," Grier adds, but having known Joe Smith, Half Barrel's owner, for several years, he worked a shift here and there. "I've worked off and on since day one," he says.

Grier likes Half Barrel in part because it appeals to a more mature demographic than other bars nearby. He says although most of their crowd consists of students, earlier in the day on weekdays there's a group of young professionals and regulars who treat the bar more like a neighborhood bar than a college hangout. "We're strict about our 21-and-up policy," Grier says, which means that the crowd isn't quite as rowdy as other venues. He adds that in the entire time he's worked there he's only seen one or two scuffles.
