Built in 1928, Knoxville’s historic Tennessee Theatre has seen decades of films and dozens of genres. Each summer it celebrates its past with a series of older movies in its “Summer Movie Magic” series.

The films selected are often classics. Many are movies that most people have only seen on television movie marathons or rented DVDs. “Summer Movie Magic” offers the chance to watch these films the way they were made to be seen — on the big screen.

Each movie at the 602 S. Gay St. theater has a Friday evening and Sunday afternoon showing. One, the 1939 epic “Gone With the Wind,” gets three showings. Tickets for any film are $8 for adults, $6 for children or senior citizens. Tickets are available at the theater box office or http://www.tennesseetheatre.com.

The series begins at 8 p.m. June 24 and June 26 with the Alfred Hitchcock thriller “North by Northwest.” The 1959 film stars Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint and includes some exciting scenes at Mount Rushmore.

The other movies are:

The 1965 Julie Andrews musical “The Sound of Music,” 8 p.m. July 8 and 2 p.m. July 10. The music for the film set in 1930s Austria includes the title song, “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and the haunting “Edelweiss.”

”Some Like It Hot,” the 1959 comedy starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Randall and Jack Lemmon. Musicians Randall and Lemmon disguise themselves as women in an all-girl band after witnessing a mob hit. In that band is Marilyn Monroe, in all her 1950s blonde splendor. “Some Like It Hot” plays at 8 p.m. Aug. 5 and 2 p.m. Aug. 7.

Scarlett and Rhett and a love story set against Georgia of the Civil War and Reconstruction. The 1939 “Gone With the Wind” has three showings. “GWTW” plays at 2 and 8 p.m. Aug. 13, 2 p.m. Aug. 14.

The 1961 musical “West Side Story,” which closes out the summer movie series. The story of rival New York gangs and young lovers is loosely based on “Romeo and Juliet.” The film starring Natalie Wood plays at 8 p.m. Aug. 19 and 2 p.m. Aug. 21.

...that's Tony Curtis in "Some Like it Hot," not Tony Randall.
