Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who was recently released from prison in his homeland but is not commenting on his situation, currently has an exhibit at the Knoxville Museum of Art.
He was released on bail last week, saying he was on probation.
The Associated Press reported from Beijing that the artist returned to his home June 22 "looking tired and thinner."
He had been detained on April 3, ostensibly for tax evasion, though his supporters and family say he was arrested for his ongoing criticism of the Chinese government.
Reporting on the releases of Ai and blogger Hu Jia, another critic of China who was released Sunday after a 3 1/2-year prison term, GlobalPost said Monday that Ai had been detained without any formal charges and was being intimidated to remain silent.
The exhibit "Ai Weiwei: Dropping the Urn," which features both photographs and ceramics, will be on exhibit at the KMA until Aug. 7, and then it will go to London's Victoria and Albert Museum.
