'Tuned In' review: Dreamers of the Ghetto dream big on 'Enemy Lover'

“Enemy/Lover,” Dreamers of the Ghetto (Temporary Residence)

Anything can happen in a dream: You might be running for your life from a toothbrush in one and simply stuck in traffic in another.

Dreamers of the Ghetto produces music for life-changing dreams — like if you were to visit with deceased relatives and realize something about your destiny.

Such is the power of minor chords and major vocals from this keyboard-rock band.

The Bloomington, Ind., group features the uncannily passionate voice of Luke Jones, who gets instrumental backup from his brother, Jonathan, his wife, Lauren, and drummer Marty Sprowles. Their sound is dark and fluid, and it congregates in swells that buoy the heart-filled, throaty delivery of the singer. It’s overpowering, but it satisfies, the sonic equivalent of deep-tissue massage.

And even when the lyrics don’t carry tremendous significance, the sheer emotion of “Enemy/Lover” makes it feel consistently meaningful.

Dreamers of the Ghetto is a direct descendent of Depeche Mode, though Luke Jones is infinitely more straightforward and accessible than David Gahan. His earnest grit is touching as he relays, “When you’re gone, I know you’re with me” on the pulsing “Connection” and, “I don’t care what they think; it’s not their dream” on the funereal/romantic “Always.”

From the gripping “State of a Dream” to the pounding epic closer “Tether,” “Enemy/Lover” engages in forced hypnosis on its audience, and some listeners will feel fatigued by the relentless “importance” of it all.

However, that’s nothing a nice nap won’t remedy.

Sweet dreams.
