Johnny Cash’s life and career will be featured this fall in a six-part documentary.

“Johnny Cash: Song By Song” will weave the tales from Cash’s life through his songs and stories of his past. It premieres Oct. 7 on Ovation.

Each installment will use an iconic Cash song as its theme. The songs include “I Walk The Line,” “Ring of Fire,” “Jackson,” “A Boy Named Sue,” “Sunday Morning Coming Down” and “Hurt.”

Singers Grace Potter and Shooter Jennings will contribute their thoughts and memories.

Cash was Jennings’ godfather. For Potter, Cash was a muse.

“He was this rebel that inspired me,” Potter said. “I don’t think he’s any different (as an inspiration) for women than men.”

Potter terms Cash’s musical influence as being “asexual.”

When Potter was in grade school, she had a picture of Cash making an obscene finger gesture on her notebook. Teachers would see it and reprimand her.

Potter’s response to her teachers?

“But,” she pleaded with them, “he’s Johnny Cash!”

Potter said Cash inspired “the punk” spirit inside her.

She said she will contribute her observations of Cash’s music in two of the six installments.

On the music front, Potter will be featured on Kenny Chesney’s next single, “El Cerrito Place.” The two won a huge chart hit and critical acclaim with their last collaboration, “You And Tequila.”

Potter also wants to perform in Knoxville again soon. Her spokeswoman said Potter may try to squeeze in a Knoxville show in October if her schedule permits.
